Conor Oberst – Slowly (Oh So Slowly) Lyrics 16 years ago
Does it seem to anyone other than me that "loaded line" and his reference to "white" may be some obscure reference to cocaine? That was what first occurred to me when listening to it. I'm still trying to work out why he would use that reference for potential *shrug*

All in all I think the song is mostly about allowing life to pass you by, waiting for tomorrow to do all the things you have left to do and continously putting if off until all the days have slipped away and you are dying. The reference to dementia seems to be referring to the growing older.

By saying "My mind keeps slipping back into the past
I hope someday I can get it back"
I think he may be saying that he finally realizes all the opportunities he let slip by and he wishes he could reverse the clock and go back to do all those things.

And the last verse about the train pulling away is most definitely a reference to death.

It makes sense that this song would be about missed chances and life ending. With Conor's struggles with family, depression and drugs and alcohol it is no wonder that he may have regrets about missing out on certain things in life...

Conor Oberst – Bloodline Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, so this is just my interpretation based on what I see in the lyrics and what the other songs seem to be about.

I think there are a couple of topics in the song, but the most prevalent seems to be politics.

"Rolling around a lifetime on a name that spells my past
Carried through the mile markers up towards some last laugh
And if fools could only prosper, I'm afraid what they might say
From a podium built on generations bleeding what they make"

This whole verse speaks to the fact that a politician's name can dredge up so much slander and can make or break their path through politics. Even the history of your own family can affect your future.
And "podium built on generations bleeding what they make"? Come on, that is so obviously a snark about taxes.

The second verse is commentary on people who vote one way all the time without considering the actual candidates and what they stand for. "You were born into it, there's no shame if you drift" is basically what most people do. They are born into a family with specific political beliefs and they vote that way the rest of their lives.

The third verse is pretty much about money being what makes the wheels of politics move. "There's ten dollars on the table, and a million up his sleeve" is more than likely referring to bribes and lobbyist backing of candidates.

As for the rest I'm really not sure, given my analysis was done in the space of about 10 minutes. Maybe later I'll have a more complete context.

Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics 19 years ago
(Let the poets cry themselves to sleep)
I think this could be possibly talking about Ian and conor themselves, but perhaps it has a double-meaning...

(And all their tearful words could turn back into steam)
And I agree with the assertion that this is about the person's parents....and it really makes more sense when you think of the person as being his cousin.

(But me, I'm a single cell on a serpent's tongue)
Possibly a reference to the serpent in the garden of eden, I also think that it is refering to conor being only a part of a corrupt society and he can't do anything to change it to help this person.

(And there's a muddy field where a garden was)
Another possible reference to the garden of eden, such that the person the song is about did not want to believe it was real.
