According to lead singer John McCrea, this song is "about how when you hate things, the circle of hate starts rather broadly. You hate the President or a big movie star, someone you'll probably never meet. Gradually though, the circle tightens and the objects of hate get closer and closer to the hater. Now it's your uncle or your mother, now it's your close friend, and finally it's you. Bummer."
All in all, it's an awesome song... Nothing has changed about their sound over the years and given all the band's that have changed their sound, it's refreshing that someone is going against the industry and staying true to themselves. |

I think this song is their best ever, even beating some of the songs on Siren Song of the Counter Culture (still their best album, I think.) I saw them sing this in Cleveland to open up their tour and it was before the album came out. I think every person in the crowd thought when Tim was coming out with a chair and a guitar that we were gonna hear Swing Life Away. But he just completely blew us away with this song. This song is so true and relative to what is happening right now. I support our troops fully, but don't support the reason we're over there. But everything Tim sang about in the song is right, from the recruiting tactics they use (believe me, in high school, I almost fell for them) to telling about boot camp to telling about things that happen over there. If you think the media tells us everything that happens over there, get out from under the rock your living under. All this happens over there. You never hear about the civilians that die over there, but Tim illustrated what happens over there beautifully. So much emotion. I love it. |

i saw them perform last night and it was so sweet and ronnie's brother just joined the military (good luck to his brother) and he dedicated this song to him and all the soldiers fighting for our freedoms overseas |
