Grateful Dead – Ramble On Rose Lyrics 14 years ago
Rose is born to ramble. She is chasing down a destination unknown. The grass is always greener on the other side until you get there, but the urge to keep moving is always there.

The Band – It Makes No Difference Lyrics 15 years ago
"Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold"
This is quite possibly the most profound statement of love in this song or in any. Seeing as most songs are about love and this song is one of the best, this could easily be interpreted as the most profound lyric ever written.
It reveals a truth that Jackson Browne was trying to convey in many of his songs, and was able to grasp in some ways.
I once heard Stephan Jenkins say in a song:
"I want you to love me
Like you did
Before you knew me"

The overarching feeling in that song and the lyrics in this one is that 'true' love in life never lives up to expectations. When a love (a relationship may be a more direct word) dies untold, the future of that love exists only as it was created in the imagination of the unrequited lover. And this is the most perfect love there is. This is the love we dream about as children. This is the love we here stories about and aspire to have one day. This is the construct of the ideal love in each and every one of us; a psychological manifestation of the hole in our hearts that wants to be completely filled and once we can fill that hole with our soul mate, everything else in life will fall into place.

This is my humble interpretation of the lyrics.

The Band – It Makes No Difference Lyrics 15 years ago
My brain is very fuzzy and thinking wierd right now from the benzos, so pardon me if this doesn't sound fluent.
Yeah it sucked. Poor old man was coming to an end. It's sad to see that kind of deterioration. It almost makes me want to cry because you can still hear that enduring emotion in his voice; the song still had meaning. As it was said the shadow never seems to fade away.
The sun didn't shine anymore, the rain still falling. It just added up to be a very depressing while heartfelt performance.
Not sure if you looked into it that deeply, but it meant a lot to me.
RIP Rick Danko, one of the greatest musicians to have ever contributed his talents to the world.

Third Eye Blind – Wounded Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so beautiful and perfect in every way. Sigh. If only Stephen Jenkins could still write like this instead of being all political and fake.
If I had to pick one song as my favorite of all time, it woudl be tough, but this would probably be it.

Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics 19 years ago
I believe this song is about the classic two types of lifestyles
on one hadn you have the struggle for material wealth and possesions and money..
then on the other hand you have the family man, or love oriented, feeling person. someone who strives to make other people happy or do the right thing (the things that money can't buy)
i think he was struggling on how to live his life between the two
'I also think that dreamgirl has the right idea for what he decides in the end
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
Only to surrender'

I've always had a little laugh whenever i hear the line
"Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light" -hah is this implying that old people are bad drivers??

Jackson Browne – Doctor My Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
well this song was on his very first album, Jackson Browne, released in '72 which was in the middle of the Vietnam War so it could be about the war.
I know that his father was serving in the military during the war, but i dont think Jackson Browne himself ever served. if his eyes had "seen too much" it definitely wasnt from first hand experience in Vietnam. As OpinionHead said it doesnt appear to be in protest to anything.

I think the song is more about how once you come of age you can free your mind and take in observe as much as you can around you and try to be as unbiased as possible, but in the end, you will come to the realization that it is better to let people do what they will do because you just cant change the world

submissions
Bob Seger – Against the Wind Lyrics 19 years ago
Although i like this cover much better, many people dont know that this was originally a song by the Highwaymen (a musical "supergroup" similar to rock and roll's traveling wilburys, but the highwaymen were a vintage country band consisting of country legends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and one other guy, i cant remember at teh moment, they were formed before true rock and roll came to be.)

i love how this song accents bob segers rebel side, how he was always going against teh grain. it really reminds me of a lot of songs by tom petty. those two are some of the greatest true american songwriters of the 20th century

Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics 19 years ago
i hate this song it annoys me

and did anyone else find it ironic that they played this song at the opening of the first Saints game in the Louisiana Superdome since Hurricane Katrina. All of america was growing closer because the Saints playing football in the superdome was like representing america getting back up together and recovering from a disaster by supporting one another YET the album the song was on was basically just rebelling against the american way and calling us a bunch of idiots(reverse partiotism)???

Tom Petty – Square One Lyrics 19 years ago
This is absolute proof that Tom Petty's voice hasnt lost its essence yet, though some people still like to think so. If i had to pick my favorite song for Highway Companion this would be it.

BTW, Elizabethtown is such an incredible movie and the soundtrack just makes it all that much better.

Tom Petty – Rebels Lyrics 19 years ago
Good god I cannot believe there aren't more comments on this song, this is along with american girl and lonesome sundown my favorite Tom Petty song. I love how everything Tom Petty sings about is real, he's always been such a rebel, organizing fan protests against the big record conglomerates (the "$8.98"" album, some fans might know what I'm talking about, hah) and just rebelling to stand up for what he believes by any means necessary.

Wow. I cannot believe there arent more comments on this song. Of all the artists I listen to and all the songs listened to over the years there is one that has stuck out and that is of course Roll Me Away. It always paints this gorgeous american countryside scene and reminds me how much I want so badly to be free liek that.

This one's for me, Bob Seger wrote this song for me I know it.
