U2 – God Part II Lyrics 17 years ago
Unfortunately, Stoneman and brandonabe have been misled. Larry Norman did write a very similar song, but U2's was released a full two year's before his. His song is actually called "God Part III". The lyrics in the U2 version are all Bono.

The song itself lists a number of things that Bono doesn't believe in (similar to Lennon's song). however, the song also focuses too a large degree on hypocrisy. The line "I don't believe in riches but you should see where I live" seems to perhaps be a subtle dig at Lennon, but I don't think the entire song is about him. I think the overall theme is that there is sometimes a very wide chasm between what we claim to believe and what we actually do.

Genesis – Dreaming While You Sleep Lyrics 18 years ago
Sure, it's about a hit and run, but it's a lot deeper than that. The woman or little girl that he hit is in a coma and the guilt has devastated his life. "Dreaming while you sleep" suggests that he's dreaming while she sleeps. His life is a haze, like "this has to be a dream".

The second aspect that he deals with is the selfishness of it all. Of course he didn't stop after he struck her. He assumed that she was dead and kept on driving. Lines that initially seem to be about guilt such as "I will never be free all my life, trapped in her memory" actually point to a more selfish motivation. He doesn't say trapped "with" her memory, but trapped "in" her memory. He's not trapped with the memory of this person, but trapped in her mind, afraid that when she awakes, she will be able to identify him.

What results is this duality. On the one hand, as most decent people would, he hopes that she comes out of her coma and is okay. On the other hand, he's afraid that if she does, he'll be caught. Does he go so far as to hope that she doesn't wake up?

U2 – Until The End Of The World Lyrics 19 years ago
It's definitely about Judas and Jesus. Bono has said as much many times. In fact, during many of the Zoo TV shows, as the Edge was playing the opening riff, Bono would shout "Hey Judas! Come on!".

Bono has taken some poetic license with the history of things. I believe that Judas actually kissed Jesus on the cheek, but to say "I kissed your lips" allows the song to be interpreted in a romantic way by making it less obviously about Judas and Jesus.

I've always thought of Judas as such a tragic character. It's as though he were just playing some cosmic role that history required. Jesus had to be betrayed, so someone had to do it. I think his life probably ended as described in the song: "waves of regret, waves of joy, I reached out for the one I tried to destroy". I like to think that he reached out for forgiveness and God's mercy before he hung himself.

As a side note, if you've never heard this song live, you're missing out. The Edge is unbelievable.

U2 – One Step Closer Lyrics 19 years ago
"The heart that hurts is a heart that beats... can you hear the drummer slowing?"

This is one of the greatest lines ever to appear in a song. The singer hurts, which means that he's still alive. The fact that he feels the pain means that things aren't as bad as they could be. He still lives. But just as that starts to set in, Bono slaps us with another harsh reality: he won't be alive for much longer. He's still dying.

I think it points to a greater truth, which is that pain is a part of life. To be free of pain is to be dead and that time will eventually come for all of us.

R.E.M. – Bang And Blame Lyrics 19 years ago
The song seems to be about an unwanted result of casual sex. This could be emotional issues or even a pregnancy. The line "you've got a little worry", seems to point to this.

He goes on to tell her that sure, he's been with her but so have a lot of other guys ("...But so does every kiss-and-tell who dares to cross your threshold"). She could be a prostitute. She could just get around a lot. She's trying to blame him for something that has happened and he in turn calls her a tramp and tells her to move on.

But in then the last verse of the song, the perspective seems to have changed. Stipe now portrays himself as the victim and seems to point to a longer term relationship that has him beaten down. She's screwed him, messed him up, beat him down, and now blames him for it all.
