because this is on the cruel intentions soundtrack, it's got a strong association with the vicomte valmont in my head... i never saw cruel intentions, but i was aware that this was on the soundtrack, so when i read the book it was based on and feel in love with it, it had to have this on there. it's not a difficult song to understand, but at the same time there are deeper threads running through it. it's about someone who always uses people and so they tend to go after casual lovers because they know they'd just use someone who was really in love with them if they found them... |

it's about someone who feels like they aren't a good person in the way that society defines it: they aren't loyal, faithful, etc, they follow their own pleasure, and people say things like that they are "borderline" or "skitzo" or "bipolar" to describe them, because other people think there's something wrong with them... the song seems to suggest both that there is something black eyed about them (i see black eyed as sort of like having damaged eyes that see the world differently, more like someone who said it was similar to black hearted than a bruise.) and that they don't really regret it enough to try to change, but that they sometimes also wonder if something is wrong. the laying the blame on the family is both sarcastic and not... they don't quite buy that it's all mommy and daddy's fault but they wonder if it's because they had an unhappy childhood that they are so detached. black eyed suggests a bruise, as if the person is wondering if they've been hurt or if, like the people with the diseases, they were somehow born that way. i think more people feel this way than they admit though, and the problem is that this person doesn't fake caring about morals and people's opinions that they don't care about. this is another song that really strongly reminds me of damon salvatore from the vampire diaries. |

although i agree with lutehrius' comment, i'd have to say that the "little razorblade girl" part is kind of tongue in cheek: the girl in question is a drama queen, a little bit of a poser and an egoist and probably is so wrapped up in her own issues, both those she really has and the ones she's decided to have because it's currently trendy athat she doesn't really notice the depth of the singer's feelings for her, the real person he thinks he sees beneath the masking, which the singer is starting to doubt is even really there. the "i'm sick of never smiling" is both a reference to the pain of this ongoing love affair and the pain of knowing you're hanging out in a kind of fake world but being unable to stop for the sake of that girl. or at least... it seems like it. the "don't call it a crush" part... it always seemed to me like the singer was trying not to be in love with the person anymore. and it's really catchy, stays stuck in my head for days. |

i actually like this version a lot better than the usual one. the ending verses are so perfect i don't know why they changed them... "there's a blaze of light in every word, it doesn't matter which you heard." is my favorite line, and i think it refers to art and music and love, and how even if you aren't loved back in the same way or the people don't really get the songs you sing or whatever, it's still filling you with "light" to feel those feelings or or sing those songs... you can still gain transcendence from them. |

| this is such an awesome song! it's very abstract and a little hard to listen to if you aren't prepared for it. i don't think it's just about any one thing, there are seedy back alley abortionists in it, and women who don't care and sleep with people because they just figure they should and don't get anything about it, and people with cancer and women with cancer in their souls. the woman, mrs. jones, (possible reference to something like "me and mrs. jones?) is a really tough woman and merciless, but at the same time she's not really all there. i don't know... it's a paranoid song, and i get a kind of vibe off it like there's some kind of voodoo going on in it. | |

a lot of people have gotten it right, except the obvious nuts. yoko's in there, nancy and being "kurt's wife" and john are in there. the "i don't remember i forget" part, and the way she repeats lyrics from other songs is because the media, who were trashing her at that time because of what happened to kurt, often say that courtney is so strung out that she forgets her own lyrics, and she was making fun of that. courtney does change her lyrics over time, or originally write something one way and change her mind and sing it a different way later, but she's saying it's not because she forgot them, it's because they're HER songs and she can sing them however she wants and the lyrics will still be right. |

this was the first hole song i ever heard, way back when i was wee little whatchamacallit sitting in my grandaddy's truck. i think it's pretty obvious this song is about fangirls. the girls who used to think she was so cool and now think she's sold out or killed kurt. fame is fickle. the first verse where they talk about the riots might be about the young girls who think they're punk or riotgrrls or whatever, but don't really know what that means. posers. and of course these little girls that worship kurt. and the lowest common denominator, and how even if you try not to sell out, hollywood will sell you out anyway. "Hey, run away with the light Run away it's divine Let's run away, yeah, tonight and We'll steal the light of the world" i guess she was hoping to change things. let's take the music away from hollywood. |

this song is a very mysterious sort of song... i'm not even sure all the verses are the same girl. but when i hear this song, i think it's about someone the singer knew a long time ago, and is worried about... in the first verse, i somehow got the impression she was on all fours and he was kissing the floor, that they were both under the control of a third party, real or metaphorical.... i guess i think they were both under the control of that third party or together in some way once, aren't there now, and he's here looking back thinking "whatever happened to her?" and maybe he can't remember her name, just a little of what she was like. like they were kids together or something. in my head, this song has a strong connection to the egl/lolita subculture, so that may have colored my meaning of it. |
