@[cherry:51937]-blossom I don't usually speak of sexism, but it does seem that her endless giving is consistent with what our culture has told women time immemorial. One's heart breaks one thinks about all the people who have given everything they can to their loves, only to be ignored or even injured by them. Gosh, why am I so sentimental right now?

@[Waffles:51936] McCoy so true re. The Giving Tree which everyone loves. My mother (May she rest in peace) was a nursery school director and she felt that the Giving Tree taught the wrong message when one is trying to teach children self-esteem and valuing themselves. I think this tale is a very sad story, and Renaissance does a masterful job at expressing why in the end, there isn't that much happiness or positivity that comes from giving everything away. But I don't think that that's really the meaning of this song, it is a component of the song. I need to keep listening. I love this band!

Rush – La Villa Strangiato Lyrics 19 years ago
Neil Peart continues to astound me; I think his complex minimalist beginning to this song is extraordinary. I can't get enough of this incredible musicanship! I like the live version a lot, but the version on "Hemispheres," an underrated album, speaks volumes. Thanks for the history on this song and Alex's dreams...

Rush – Distant Early Warning Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with "floydfan87:" The first paragraph says very clearly,
"There's no swimming in the heavy water-
No singing in the acid rain
Red alert (red alert)." Heavy water is D20, Hydrogen with an extra neutron. It is utilized in the production of nuclear warheads. Accompanied by "acid rain," it's talking about all the complexities of our society and whether we are receiving "Distant Early Warnings," just like they did through NORAD. It is a metaphor for our own ability to deal with the complexity of a falling-apart world. That's why "The world weights on my shoulders." Love the lyric, "Left and rights of passage." NOt to mention kick-ass musicianship! :)
