Just had to signup when I saw these interpretations. This is song is about putting work first and climbing the corporate ladder at the expense of your relationships. Nothing else. It uses race track analogies. "muscle for rank" - corporations are hierachial. "the arena is empty except for one man" - working late after the office gone home "the fans get up and they get out of town" - clients leave CBD to go home to families. "she's all alone in her time of need because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course" - putting work first but he is doing it for her, ironically she needs him at home more Second paragraph just deals with his compulsiveness to succeed and prove himself blinding everything else.
