the line "I love you more" really resonates with me. something about her intonation and emphasis. just grabs me. |

Paris of the South is probably a reference to Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC. it is a nickname for the towns, and also oberst has a couple friends from saddle creek that live down in the area. |

I think its more likely related to the second coming, a poem by wb yeats, that is thematically very similar to the song. |

i love the concept of starting an album in medias res, with crane wife part 3, rather than 1 and 2. It just throws you right into the universe crafted by meloy's epic songwriting. I like the fact that the album isnt as consistent, too. |

| Camera Obscura – Tears for Affairs Lyrics

You had to drive
(I didn’t want to)
Look me in the eye
(I found it hard to)
Whisper don’t cry
(I had to whisper don’t cry)
So I cried
I love this section, just because I can relate to breaking down while having the discussion in the car, how claustrophobic and intense it can get in a closed space like that with no escape. |

| Camera Obscura – Pen and Notebook Lyrics

ex that, actually. this song seems to be, on a second look, about his pen and notebook revealing differences and unspoken tension, and the distancing in their relationship. She doesnt seem to agree with his drinking, indicated in the red wine part. Then, when talking of the stars, she seems to lament that they are no longer together, and questioning whats hes doing... but things have changed, and "We're not the same" indicates a shift from the idealism earlier in a relationship to the fallout.
just my spin. prolly completely wrong. |

yeah its a great song, it gets you into the beck mindset really well, and just gets your feet thumpin; a little primer before the weird darkness that the album drifts into |

hasbulelias you say "no offense" and try to act like a humanist, but in the end you come off as a complete asshole. This is coming from a person, not a christian, too. |

3rd best song on Illinoise after Chicago and Casimir Pulaski Day. The final stanza just haunts me, and really connects with my personal experience at the same time. I feel like we all have secrets and sins, though not of course to the severity of a serial killer. And we cannot bury these beneath the floorboard but must reconcile with them and repent.
oh, and I can't seem to play this song around other people. it makes me uncomfortable. But i love it all the same. |
