Just heard an acoustic version of this for Dave's new DVD. Instead of the "Elevator to ICU" part, he sang "Sunrise at the County Lock-up" |

I imagine the whole song being written by someone in a mental institution. All the fear and desperation in the lyrics, and then the last line also makes sense. |

I could be wrong, but I thought it was (I call my costars "brother" I call my costars "knave"). Almost like a term of endearment or scorn, matches with the "play both good and evil parts" as well. |

I've taken the song to be about being successful in the music industry. Sort of about not wanting to sacrifice yourself, but also wanting to get enough listeners. At least that's what I've taken by the "wobbly wave of fame" comment. Since "Wasted & Ready" I don't think Ben has gotten much mainstream success, but obviously he has become an indie success. So he's gone from radio, MTV, and late-night shows to being fairly unknown except to those of us who seek him out. |

I think the biographical take is a bit of a stretch, he surely doesn't have children nor would he probably consider himself an adulterer. What I take out of it is just the lesson that things never go as planned, and how a whole bunch of seemingly minor random events can sometimes come together to snowball into something much bigger. Mostly its just a great song. |

beating the buggers (not brothers)
smoke screen (not smoke stream)
also instead of pariots I believe he's actually saying hate-triots |

"Never meant to leave the way you came" to me says it best. Mainstream religion has a real complex about controlling their followers, and I think this particular person came into the Church with the idea that it would make them more free from damnation, but then realized that once you are inside you are less free. Unless you are a person who just happens to agree with every single aspect, you are shunned. |

I agree with most, I don't see it as an overtly religious theme, but more of a message of maturity. As people get older and gain that patience/maturity to understand that the world doesn't revolve around just ourselves, we can appreciate others more. |

Obviously in the song he is comparing himself to another person who is "up with the sunrise and down when the work's been done" which is not uny industry workers today. What it really made me think of was a farmer, who works because he has to and doesn't stop until he's actually finished. They don't watch the clock waiting for breaks or the 8-hour mark, and here's this guy who can't even get himself up and out of bed. |
