I think this song is talking about our faith becoming a chore. We start out loving God, and then after time it becomes more about playing a role than truly serving Him. And then when distractions come, you begin wondering why you are bothering. "But I'm just tired of walking upright When I don't mean right. I just want to look right." i think he's saying "I want this to be real, or I don't want it at all. If it isn't real, it is not worth the time or effort." |

'but what good is the whole world when i promise no tomorrow i only promise your tomorrows will never take you past my palm" one of my favorite lines in any song, ever. life is temporal. hard times will come. there will be suffering. but through it all, regardless of what we see, God still holds us in his hands. reminds me of a line from a Luti-Kriss song... "in the unseen, i have hands holding me from the ground." |

I think this song has a very simple meaning. Too many people in the church expect that, in coming to salvation, we will immediately become perfect Christians. Or that, growing up in the church, we will never screw up. They speak of grace, but only extend it to those who "deserve" it. What I think these words boil down to is this: if any of us DESERVED grace, we wouldn't need it. (one of the things I love about this album is how so many of the songs explore the theme of Grace from different angles...it is definitely something we need to hear) |

i've had the cd for a few days now, listened to it at least 15 times. i'm pretty sure he's right..."you made a holy fool of me, and i've thanked you ever since." also, "bitter as mustard greens" is pretty definitely correct, as is "maybe ankle high" also...unfortunately, the "i do not exist" part didnt show up on the cd. it was amazing at Cornerstone, but i guess its something he added later. Hopefully he'll sing that part when I see them Sunday. |
