| CocoRosie – Houses Lyrics

It seems to me to be about someone who is not loved by her mother and does not necessarily know what being loved is. Because she wants to believe she is loved, she takes her mother's feeding her to be love. And because she craves love so much, she eats up all she can get, probably with no satisfaction of her desire.
As far as the “houses” part, it brings to mind many images. But I get the impression that the singer sees families falling apart all around her, and she does not want hers to, although it likely already has, and she just does not want to accept it. This ties back to the way she is insistent that she and her mother are loving, thus clinging on the lie that her family is loving. |

“My Only Friend” is about the singer's feeling of connection with Billie Holiday. In his times of depression and loneliness, he turns to the melancholy music of Lady Day. In this way he has a relationship with her and so feels that she is his only friend. |

| The Beach Boys – Cabinessence Lyrics

Like much of the album Smile itself, the song “Cabinessence” tells a story of American history. In this case it is about expanding to the west, particularly by means of the transcontinental railroad in the mid nineteenth century. The word cabin would be referring to the cabin cars of a freight train, traveling west during this time of change for the country.
Grain (wheat and corn) is mentioned throughout the song. And when the words “I want to watch you windblown facing,” you might think of the windy city. During the mid nineteenth century, Chicago became one of the largest grain ports in the world.
When Mike Love sings the words “Have you seen the grand coolie workin' on the railroad,” play on words are apparent. The Grand Coulee is a riverbed in Washington State. The dam was particularly significant during the production of “Cabinessence,” because beginning in 1966, it was expanded, making it one of the largest hydroelectric facilities in the world. While a coulee is a gorge, coolie was a derogatory term used for Asian immigrants in America during the mid nineteenth century, who worked on the railroads. |

| Wilco – Radio Cure Lyrics

"Radio Cure" is about someone who feels distanced from somebody he loves. He tries to get near this person, but they do not show any love back. They may be depressed, for which reason they try to heal their mind by listening to music, refered to as "electronic sergical words." When he sings "picking apples for the kings and queens of things I've never seen," he is expressing how he is making an effort to love this person, although he isn't receiving anything in return. |
