CHVRCHES – Science/Visions Lyrics 4 years ago
Really cool song. It has a dark vibe and cryptic lyrics. I love Chvrches. I discovered them late (only a few months ago). I got all their albums now and have been listening a lot. I love Lauren Mayberry's voice. Brilliant singing.

CHVRCHES – Science/Visions Lyrics 4 years ago
I believe this song reflects the state of mind of scientists during the Age of Enlightenment. New experiments and technologies of the time allowed those pioneers to discover things for the first time that may have conflicted not only with their own beliefs, but the mainstream Christian dogma. These discoveries led to epiphanies in the scientists who began to realize religion did not fully explain the world. They were finally able to answer questions they pondered for years. I think this song essentially describes one of these scientist's epiphanies and his state of mind just before going public with the results of his experiment. "Be near when I call your name" could be the scientist's way of saying "trust me" or "stay by my side" to his companion (friend or lover perhaps). Many risked their lives pursuing their studies, not so much due to heresy (we're talking the 17th and 18th century, not the Middle Ages), but rather from being outcasted from society (and thus impoverished). What they feel "leaving their body" could be the burden of religion that has held them back. They have to relax and just breath because the burden was so heavy - it is a big change for them. "Science and visions" are just that, "science" as opposed to religion; and "visions" as opposed to faith; "visions" being what a person actually sees/witnesses (not hallucinations).

CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share Lyrics 5 years ago
I am only now discovering this awesome song. I have two interpretations of this song.

The first interpretation is my initial gut reaction to it which I think most people have and is that of siblings who have distanced themselves over the years. Perhaps there was rivalry growing up and now as adults they have little incentive to even talk to one another. But this song is about removing the pride and reconnecting with siblings.

My second interpretation is after having listened numerous times and analyzing the lyrics. It is about being Agnostic in a Christian society. (Agnostic meaning you are not decided on religion, you are seeking further knowledge). The lyrics seem directed towards both God and Christianity as a whole..

"Never took your side / Never cursed your name" means: While I did not believe in you, at least I didn't speak your name in vain. In other words, I obeyed your rules while seeking my own knowledge.

"I keep my lips shut tight / Until you go oh oh oh" means: I was not speaking out against Christianity until you had a problem with my Agnosticism.

"We've come as far / As we're ever gonna get / Until you realize / That you should go" means: Society has come a long way with all its science and technology, so now Christianity feels threatened and thus goes on the offense against Agnosticism.

"I'm in misery where you can seem as old as your omens" means: While I am in a miserable state of confusion, sacrificing my time to learn, adapting to the insane modern world, making decisions; you, meanwhile, have stayed the same since the time of your prophets.

"And the mother we share will never keep your proud head from falling" means: Our common ancestor, the universe itself, or, in some ways, Mother Earth, can not prevent your ultimate demise. That is, all things come to an end, and even the universe can not stop it. Think of this as entropy, or the fact that every thing breaks down over time. So, no matter how high Christianity holds it's proud head, it too will eventually fall.

"The way is long but you can make it easy on me / And the mother we share will never keep our cold hearts from calling" means: It is a long road to discovering the truth, so stop making it harder by fighting me. The universe (our mother) erases nothing; even at the end when everything is frozen (the big freeze) the decisions we made are still traceable, calling, forever a part of history. So just be nice on this long journey.

I will end my interpretation here for now as this would become quite long. But everything holds up when keeping the Agnosticism vs Christianity theme in mind. Thanks for reading.
