I dont think i will ever understand the meaning of this song totally, it seems to include so much...themes of suicide, murder, sex, religion, and love. Basically I see Jonny being beaten by a guy, and because Jonny has knives taped to his chest he is bleeding alot.. When the Horses come is possibly his near death experience..The part Patti adds about all the dances may possibly be just trying to describe a whole variety of emotions/feelings in passing between life and death. Next the Angel is there with Jonny commenting on how he let himself die/go to the after life without a struggle. Then it goes to show how maybe Jonny was reckless with his knives and drugs 'snow' 'There's a little place, a place called space' I like to see this as eiether Jonny telling the angel about drug experiences or Pattie just describing the afterlife. Ok so now were with Patti/woman. I think an angel/ghost appears to patti/woman as a horse, "In the night, in the eye of the forest There's a mare black and shining with yellow hair..."that leads Patti/woman to whereever Jonny now is (dead/afterlife) and The next part about blades, seas of possibilities could be eiether Jonny is tempting Patti/woman to kill herself too seeing as theres Snake imagery or the two of them have sex...(possibly both) "this is where i died" she knows what shes going to do "the possibility Was a blade, a shiny blade, I hold the key to the sea of possibilities" This i think is patti contemplating joining Jonny through suicide "looked at my hands, and there's a red stream"- She slits her wrists. Now Jonny kills hemself too in this place/afterlife- "He opened his throat..His vocal chords started shooting like (of a horse) mad pituitary glands" (Also i think as Pattie/woman is dying she sees him appear as a horse or all of her momories become muddled and entwined...(you see this could also all be just a huge drug trip)) "No one heard that cry"-Patti/woman here is definatly dead as Jonny slips into the black tube of death himself....the Gloria reference could be symbolic of heaven or hell-(Gloria wears a RED dress don't forget) But yeah, im most probably so off the real meaning but its my meaning nethertheless...but i love this song so much i couldnt resist having a go! |

I think this song is all about how the slow realisation that she has fallen in love, elevates her to a place that maybe only taking drugs could possibly come close to. Maybe even a play on the words "Heroin/e" and "re-creation"(as in recreational drugs)?? Beautiful Song |
