Sufjan Stevens – The Mistress Witch from McClure (Or, the Mind That Knows Itself) Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah they walk in while their father is having and affair and the "shuffling at the floor" is like when they catch a glimpse of their (him and his brother) father doing it with his mistress (witch). The mind that knows itself knows much more is that he didnt actually see his dad doing anything, but knowing himself he can pretty much guess what's going on. I think the best lines are when his dad comes out pointing at his throat, and his little brother has a fit in the snow stopping traffic (lol), brilliant. And "we take him by the elbow" is also great, its like both sufjan and his dad have to somehow reconcile his obviously traumatized little borther going nuts in the snow (lol). The repetitions of oh my god makes me think that he was quite traumatized by the experience, which isnt surprising for what I think is a very young sufjan stevens with his little brother in this story. Anyway all these really simple sufjan songs where he just uses his banjo-like-guitar are great like Romulus and For the Widows of paradise and the Upper Peninsula.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about "how the hell can God take such an important life away from me", and the truth is that God is a bastard and He does whatever He wishes because, being the giver and taker of life, He sure as hell does whatever the fuck He wants. The gods are cruel. Theres also something very tragic and contradictory to the song. Is it about keeping one's faith? Not for me. For me personally he is exploring this whole idea of god, and bringing to light this contradictory relationship that man has with a godhead. How in logic's sense can a merciful god take a beautiful life away from a good man? What kind of god is this? In the end the last line is sufjan's reconcialition with his godhead, since it is only a god that takes and takes and takes (takes life) that would reaffirm his belief in a god. If his god didnt take life as cruelly as He does, then sufjan would have lost his faith (as believers have done). It is the belief that a godhead exists who both gives life and takes life that allows believers to preserve somekind of logical fallacy. Yet I believe Sufjan unintentionally (maybe intentionally) through this song has brought to light vividly through his feelings that dominate the song the tragic stupidity of this belief in a god that he once could not face in the morning. It is not a god that he couldnt face, but the fact that someone close to him was going to die. But sufjan's yearning to believe in a god is what makes the song so painful, so contradictory, so emotional and grand in its scale.

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, no offense to any christians here, but seriously, for any christians out there who wish to claim Sufjan Stevens for christians alone, since "its not often that us christians get a top selling indie artist who's also raved by the critics so come on give us christians a break we deserve this because not often do christians get it so good...etc " Well all I have to say to such a defeatist stupid attitude is this....shut the fuck up. You need to get a life if this is how you think. Before you're christians you're whats called a HUMAN BEING, like every single person on the bloody planet. Why On God's green earth would you deserve preferential treatment just for being Christians?! You're NO different from everyone else. No better, no worse. Just because Sufjan Stevens plays good music and he's a christian it now means that everything he does or says must be biblical?! What dead end trailer park do you come from? Get a life, go travel, open you eyes, not everyone in the world wants Jesus's love, heck, most of us are just trying to find love on earth, not some abstract imagined Godhead. That's right, you made God up, no one has to care what you think your god said. And open your ears, cant you recognise true emotion when you hear it? How in the hell did you manage to read into the word "you" and change it to mean "You" as in God? Did Sufjan spell it out when he sung it? NO! You've missed the point if you're trying to read god into what's just a heartaching song. What happened to your life?! Are you even living? Or are you just a freaking robot who's trying to make everything that's beautiful and sacred and alive DEAD? Get out of your box, Jesus wants you to live, LIVE man LIVE! Its just a religion, its just a box, its just a set of rules, its just some guy's imagination gone nuts, have some creativity, make up your own bloody religion!!!!!!!!!!!!
No offense okay, I just see a human being before I see a christian, a buddhist, a jew, a muslim or whatever moral code we've chosen. I only wished my brothers and sisters would fulfil their potential to be human. All of this has nothing to do with Sufjan. Its to do with egotistical people who adhere to a set of morals a guy called Jesus dreamt up 2000 years ago. 2000 years ago guys! Windows has undergone 6 updates in 10 years, and this is computers. We're human and we're still running a 2000 old programme! DO you know how out of date that is?! Its like we havent even learnt the alphabet and we still dont want to because "we're Christians so we will always run Christian version1.0", well if that's ur attitude then its your loss, cos the world is moving forward and some of us are running Life version2006.9, so see ya later! (If you can hear me from 2000 years back.)
