Conor Oberst – Moab Lyrics 11 years ago
I always meant it kinda like "how much am I willing to compromise myself and change to be liked by you? I am 10, and 0 is everything I am not. Life is compromise, and so is love, but it is also staying true to oneself amidst all that compromising. So, my offer is 5. I can change some, but no more than that. If you can't accept this because you want a prince charming or whatever falls into "less than 5", then maybe you are not willing to compromise. so why would I? we're in a mess, baby".

well, more or less :D
I've always read some bitter sarcasm in these lines, not self loathing.

Conor Oberst – Danny Callahan Lyrics 11 years ago
very touching and deep song. the key in reading its meaning is "the love we carry inside can be passed". i think it's about the complexity of the world, that can be confusing and maybe deceptive (it could even look like he's bashing science and modernity in some way, although I find it very out of character for a mind like Conor's - I feel it's extremes he wants to criticize), and in this chaos we should stay true to our humanity, and the love we carry inside which can and will be passed even if we are unable to prevent sad things, like Danny's sickness, from happening.

Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI - IX) Lyrics 12 years ago
lol not at all. why would they? they fully knew the state he was in, he was their friend and they also helped him record some if not all of his solo records. it wasnt a case of a frontman being a jackass with a self centered rockstar behaviour.

Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics 13 years ago
lol no, the chorus to me sounds like a bitter sarcastic advice to her new lover, like "good luck dude, she will blind and tie you and you won't even see it coming, and you are going to absorb all her flaws and become a prisoner, as I once was. ISHYGDDT"

Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics 16 years ago
maybe. but I see it from an even more sarcastic point of view. Conor is extra good with words and I believe he left it ambiguous on purpose.
alright, so the girl hurries up to his new lover... and BLINDS him with her kindness. so he makes WAR on who she was before and claims all that has SPOILED in her heart.
now you can view the whole thing in a positive light, which, considering the lyricist, I strongly doubt. or you can view it negatively: so, she blinds him so he is unable to see her flaws, and he'll make war (which is an awesome, awesome pun on "make love") and claim all that has spoiled, which means that by growing attached to her he will get those flaws, like an osmosis.

Monsters of Folk – Dear God (Sincerly M.O.F.) Lyrics 16 years ago
oh, he still is.

"I wish that I could touch you" doesn't seem too different from "and my absent god" way back from Waste Of Paint.
you can argue that he's trying from the next line, but then he's "behind the glass again", due to his failure in believing in god and "what keeps you out it keeps me in", inconciliable ideological differences between Conor's views and the concept of god.

anyway, this is a great song.
conceptually, I love that the verses represent thoughts from a doubting believer (James), a doubting agnostic (Ward), and a douting atheist (Conor).
And the fact that the opener for Monsters Of Folk was anything but folk.
this record is quality music. haven't heard a record so well produced in quite a while.
