| I don't doubt this song could reference a cultic theme, however I've always thought Don Henley was referring to the music business or his bandmates. In my ninth grade class we too had to write an interpretation to this song as well as others. The comment about LA makes sense. I think the song can refer to any goal or dream you have about the: future, politics, career, spouse, family, neighborhood, community, church, possessions, or friends. We sometimes think when we obtain a certain thing in life we will be happy only to find that thing we chase does not satisfy the way we thought it would or it was more work than it's worth. By the time we achieve that goal we have so much time invested into our thing we feel obligated to stick with it. For me I can apply this to all the above. By the way I have great respect for all the Eagle members. Great song writers and musicians. | |
