| This song definitely feels like it has an underlying current of death/pain in the lyrics. My horse had to be put down almost a year ago, and he was more of a person to me, we had so much strength in our love and such an understanding of one another. I listened to this song a lot after he died and it reminds me of what he would have told me, if he could talk. A lot of the things in this song, I know he would have said to me, and a lot of them I did say to him. It just relates to our situation. Towards the end, it hurt me so much to be with him (though I stayed till the end) because he was in so much pain. The part where it goes 'light up, light up, as if you have a choice, even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll be right beside you dear' always makes me cry because the way the music is, with the lyrics, reminds me of sending him to a better place...so yeah, some people might think thats stupid, but thats what this song means to me. I love Snow Patrol, I think this is an awesome song and I cry everytime I hear it, it is just so moving.. | |

Sometimes feeling pain is easier than feeling something else. Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray I've heard what they say I don't think he's saying that he's hiding his true shape like dorian gray, I think he's saying that like dorian gray who kept hearing what people thought of him, he's heard what people say about him, and because of that, he's hiding his true shape, as Dorian Gray hid hiswith his portrait... By the way, that book is I believe the best book ever written, and that anyone who hasn't read it should read it, and read it now. :) |

I think that the great thing about songs and song lyrics is that while the song writer may have their own idea about the song while they are writing it, everyone else gets to interpret it in their own way. It wouldn't be very much fun to listen to songs with such great lyrics and be like 'oh those don't mean anything, he's just talking about a prostitute; I saw it in an interview'. It's so much more fun to 'guess' the meaning. :) For me, I think this song is about a girl who has suffered a lot of pain in her life, someone who lost someone she loved. And because of that she has a hard time opening her heart to love. When she smiles, it's sad, because she hurts, and people's love hurts her. She hides her pain, trying to let people in, but she'll never truly let anyone in. She can't do this because no matter how far she goes, or how long its been, the pain, the sadness, is there with her all the time. She can't forget the pain, but it hurts her too much to remember everything, all the details that caused the pain. (Hence the line, You've gone a million miles How far'd you get To that place where you can't remember And you can't forget, which I think is amazing). I think anyone who has lost someone they loved in tragic circumstances will understand that. As for the secret garden, I think that's where she keeps her memories of whoever she lost, good or bad, about their life or their death, and they are just too personal, as some memories are, to explain or show to another person. Anyway, that's just what I get from the song, I don't think its a love song really. Sorry this is super long :) |
