riveroflethe - the band is no less cool because Brian's clean. For a start if you want drug references Meds has a fair few (you know Meds and all that) and secondly Brian could hardly carry on his addiction to entertain fans could he. All it means is now we can see him do fantastic performances of pre SWG songs and still be convincing just not dead. |

And it is of course "les phantomes de notre lit". It's an image or a metaphor.

I agree with genevieve313. For me it's about being in love with someone who's gradually drifting away from you, onto bigger and better things, forgetting you while you're left in a constant boring life where, "It always stays the same nothing ever changes". Where the hours seem to strecth on for hours while you feel lonely and paranoid and think way too deeply much like on an endless, rainy, summer afternoon. That's how i feel at the moment and while i miss my lover and sit here acheiving nothing, numbly wondering where i stand with him, i can't get the line "I'm in the basement, you're in the sky. I'm in the basement baby drop on by" out of my head. |

I always thought it was a vampire story much like the one described by My Intoxication, but now i'm prepared to accept the Dawn of the Dead theory as an INSPIRATION, but i think there's still more to it. The lines "already dead", and "not knowing you'd change from just one bite" make it pretty impossible to completely igore the zombie/vampire theory but the emotions can be taken out of that setting too i think. It's like i used to be a big Buffy fan and a lt of those stories would work fine ifyou took out the vampires.
Another thing i'm reminded of when i hear this song is Porphyria's Lover, the poem by Robert Browing (http://www.bartleby.com/101/720.html here for ppl who don't know it). The idea of wanting to keep someone with you so badly that you'd kill them to keep them with you. I'm not sure that translates exactly to this song, but in both i can see the guy killing the girl because he loves her and wants her to stay the way she is, (either not a zombie in the song, or still there and in love with him in the poem). Does that make any sense? I'm not saying that's what Gerard was writing about or anything but i can see links between the two. |

This song has had two meanings for me. At first, "Fall into you is all I seem to do when i hit the bottle cos i'm afraid to be alone" was how i felt about a friend of mine. He's one of my best friends but every time we got drunk together i was so lonely that i'd start coming on to him to avoid that loneliness. That lyric explained to me what it was i was doing. Then a bit later when i got together with my boyfriend for a few weeks i wasn't sure if we were really gonna get together or not so on the way to go meet him i would listen to this song, "Don't give up on the dream, don't give up on the wanting because i want you too." It made me realise first of all not to give up on him because deep down i could see he wanted me too but also i was willing him not to give up on me when i was too shy to show that i wanted him. I'm not sure how those two could link into one overall song meaning, like many placebo songs i think there's depths to the meaning here and a variety of feelings. Either way i adore this song! |

I never really thought about the lyric "never seen you act so shallow or look so brown" I always assumed it simply meant tanned. I had an image of a the sort of bronzed and beatiful, superficial image of the kind of person "crashing round the bay" or acting "so shallow". I imagined both these people being men but regardless of the gender i saw it as an abusive relationship but the abusive partner is so popular, beautiful (tanned and shallow) that the abused is infatuated with them and still grateful for the attention. This also fits with the "be sure to come around" bit. That could be saying be sure to notice me in your busy and popular life and come back to someone like me even if it is only for a while and to abuse me. Not vastly different to everyone else's interpretation. |
