| Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like at the end she's sing "so much better". Could this be in reference to the Jonas Brothers song "Much Better", which was about Joe's break up with Taylor?? (the lyrics went: Now I'm done with superstars, and all the tears on her guitar. You're much better.) | |

I have to say, as much as I usually love Taylor, I agree with you here. I know this song is intended to be "tongue in cheek" and playful, and some lines do reach their purpose (I personally found the line about the pastry dress quite funny), but to me the whole thing just comes off as pretentious and almost bratty. "You are not the kind of boy who should be marrying the wrong girl" What kind of boy SHOULD be marrying the wrong girl, exactly? "I know you wish it was me" I'm actually quite annoyed with the way she's always saying how she's better than the other girls (You Belong With Me, Permanent Marker, Invisible) I also agree that the wording can get quite awkward, "white veil occasion" being one of many examples! I don't really care about the whole "is she sitting, is she standing?" debate, since she mentions that she's "lost in a daydream", but I think it just proves that her tendency to give a lot of details (which I think work really well in songs like Tim McGraw or The Best Day) is not ALWAYS a good thing, since it may confuse the listener and take the focus away from the point of the song. Finally, I couldn't help but notice how similar the structure is to so many of her songs. Both Love Story and Mine end with the chorus being slightly changed and relating what the guy says. And from a musical point of view, it seems to me that the chords are exactly the same as in You Belong With Me. Before everyone tells me that I don't understand the reasoning of the song, I have seen the interview and I get what she was trying to do. I think that the idea behind the song was a good one. I just find the writing to be clumsy and unoriginal, so the story looks like an annoying, jealous ex is ruining an innocent's girl wedding rather than someone trying to stop the man she truly loves from making a mistake. |

I'm actually surprised by this new song. After Mine and Speak Now, I wasn't expecting this, and I really like it! I think it shows a more humble side of Taylor that we rarely get to see in her songs. She's usually singing about how she was right and someone did her wrong (You're Not Sorry, Picture to Burn, Should Have Said No, Forever & Always, White Horse, etc), or how she's better than her crush's girlfriend(Speak Now, You Belong With Me). Here, she's acknowledging that she made mistakes and she's apologizing to the person she hurt. It actually reminds me of Breathe, which is one of my favorite songs. The lyrics are pretty straightforward, written in Taylor's classic "storytelling" style, full of little details. She's meeting with her ex and admitting that she wasn't treating him right when they were together. Then she goes on to say that she remembers the moments they spent together, how it was fun in the beginning, how she realized she was in love with him and finally how she got scared and decided to leave him. This is the moment she keeps going back to in her mind. She wishes she could have known what he meant to her back when they were still together, before she broke up with him. At the end of the song, she says that she misses him and that she wants to get back with him, but that she understands if he's scared of being hurt again. Also, I love the way she sings, in particular at the end of the song... her voice is really soft and soothing, it's really pretty! I know there are already many rumors about who she wrote this song for, but I don't want to speculate. For me, the point of the song is much more about realizing what you have before it's too late than about trying to guess which of her ex-boyfriend this song is about. |
