Wye Oak – Mary Is Mary Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this is about a couple losing a child and struggling with the pain, and the protagonist (most likely the mother, due to the 'Mary' reference) being left behind by their partner.

"And there is no greater to despair on
And Mary is Mary and I'm not
But what, what good does she have that I have gone?"

It is said there is nothing worse than losing a child ("no greater to despair on"). Mary is Mary sounds like it's referring to Mother Mary of Jesus, who willingly gave up her son, but the protagonist here is saying she did not. The fact that this is referenced could mean the child died for some sort of purpose - perhaps in a war.

"And one head is lesser than the two heads
But we know the thoughts that go unsaid
And I'm left alone in my own home
Where all that I own is not my own"

"One head is lesser than the two heads" depicts the parents becoming separated following the death of their child. It sounds like father has run away to escape the pain, but "we know the thoughts that go unsaid" - even though the father has tried to escape this by leaving the mother behind, the thoughts of what happened can't be escaped, even if they're not spoken. "I'm left alone in my own house where all that I own is not my own" - by pointing out the house and its contents are shared, the mother is also referencing that her pain should be shared and is not solely her own to bear - the father who ran away owns some of this burden.

"And all sleeping giants, why do you lie?
Behind the eyes of who I love the best
And is there another where you do keep
The pain of another where my arms sleep"

Sleeping giants lying behind the eyes of the one the protagonist loves the most - it sounds like she is wanting the emotions ("sleeping giants") behind her partner's eyes to be expressed - whether that is by being unleashed around her, or being strong in the face of this loss. She sees them as valuable and they should be woken to help heal from this trauma.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone agrees or disagrees. Fantastic song.

Matthew Good Band – Apparitions Lyrics 18 years ago
i say to each their own, but i like to think this song is about anxiety.

"The rat in your brain turns a wheel connected to your guts" can mean this person's anxiety (the rat) is making them feel physically sick (connected to your guts). i think i read somewhere once that matt good sometimes gets so anxious that he throws up. also, "all your faults are in me" could mean that this person is anxious about what others think, and all their faults lie in what other people think.

the chorus "we're stuck inside our own machine, apparitions" could mean that this person is a prisoner in their own mind. apparitions has several meanings but google lists one definition as "something existing in perception only", which could relate to the anxiety about what other people think.

"is it strange where you are, where you used to be kind of free, are they laughing at you, laughing at you", this could mean that this person is no longer free to do as they wish because of the anxiety, and the person might be thinking people are laughing at them because of that.

the last verse is where i feel my interpretation really fits nicely. "the rat in your brain rules the world from the comfort of your living room, tell me are we leaving soon". this could mean that the social anxiety (the rat in your brain) now has control over this person's life and won't let them leave the comfort of their house (rules the world from the comfort of your living room). also, "tell me are we leaving soon" could be matt asking this person if they will be able to "go out" or whatever, or if the anxiety (the rat) won't let them.

and finally, back to being "stuck inside our own machine". this person is a prisoner of their own design, a prisoner in their own mind.

"pull the shades and lock the door, you dont need it anymore" are matt good lyrics of another song, so anxiety and isolating ones self because of it appears to be a common theme.

i'm just throwing this out there, maybe someone else sees it this way too or maybe im just crazy. either way, matt good - awesome song.

"Defining, confining, controlling, and we're sinking deeper."

Ryan Adams – La Cienega Just Smiled Lyrics 18 years ago
some songs can mean whatever you want them to mean. this is one of them. its about love, but to me, this song is about addiction to drugs and how they are destroying him but he can't stop. the drugs make him feel good for a while but they always end up leaving him feeling depressed when they wear off. in the first verse the drugs are wearing off, and he's thinking "how'd i end up feeling so bad for such a little girl". then there's the element of addiction - "la cienega just smiled... see you around". he feels helpless to his addiction and knows he'll be back for more. "i hold you close in the back of my mind and raise my glass cause either way i'm dead" - he's giving up. also, the drugs dont make him feel good that often anymore, and they dont help him cope. "neither of you really help me to sleep anymore, one breaks my body and the other breaks my soul". he still goes back to the drugs though - "oh the night here it comes again, its off witht he jeans, the jacket and the shirt". i'm not sure if it's just me that all that makes sense to, but i'm just putting it out there.
