This song is about his old mail route and reader's digest. When he was still delivering mail readers digest randomly one day decided to give all the subscribers an american flag sticker. He said he remembers coming out the next day and those stickers were stuck everywhere possible and found it humerous. I remember here after 911 mcdonalds gave out those american flag stickers and i still see them stuck everywhere. Same idea. |

John Prine played at the library of congress in 2005 and was interviewed by Ted Kooser (a poet). John Prine said this song was not about dope but instead a state of mind that he used to arrive at when he was thinking. He described it as a "I know and other people cant appreciate or understand how im thinking about the world at the moment." He said that many of his songs were thought up in these Illegal Smile moments. |
