Thrice – Cold Cash And Colder Hearts Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, I might be totally off here but this is how I interpreted it solely based on my own initial thoughts. I think songs can certainly be taken different ways and honestly I don't see a problem with that. If I wrote a song and it helped one person overcome something, touched a different person in a completely different way and made someone else realize something different still... my work would be done. Anyway, back to the song.

I know some of you are going to argue whether the members of Thrice are Christians, whether they're a Christian band... but it just doesn't matter. This is how I see it.

I see this song as somewhat of a wakeup call to Christians (myself included) who think that they're on top of the world, holier-than-thou and too good to help the ones who need it, as Jesus - the one they (we) serve - Himself did. "they are sick/they are poor/and they die by the thousands and we look away"

"they're not going to move us/or get in our way/cause we don't have the time/here at the top of the world"
We've got good things going and the poor, the rejected, the diseased... they're not going to get in the way.

"different god/darker skin/they are just not a burden that we'd like to bear/they are living in sin"
People with a different religion - they're all sinners and we just don't want to take them into our hearts. We can "we hold our own/by keeping our hearts cold" and just keep everyone that isn't worthy, that isn't like us, out.

"there are so many reasons for us not to care"

"we've learned money matters most/so we keep our cards held close/.../they are no one/they are nowhere/they are not our problem/no one seeing/non existant/if we keep our hearts/they are no one/they are nowhere"
This part gives me chills. How many times do we (I) do this in any given time span? Honestly. How many times do I, calling myself a Christian, brush off those who aren't? How often do I convince myself that people of other cultures, backgrounds and especially other religions just aren't good enough, and deserve to be forgotten?

Beautiful song.
Chilling lyrics.
A cupful of cold water on our colder hearts.
