My english teacher once compared this song to hte famous "To Be Or Not To Be..." soliloquy in Hamlet, saying it followed a very natural train of thought- the way we all think when thinking about something abstract like love or life after death- these things are so hard to conceptualise that when our mind wanders there is no right or wrong and we question ourselves and contradict ourselves. It also mirrors a person's a person's train of thought in the sense that not everything is cl;early explained or defined, they are loose thoughts that jump around. And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try Every whisper Of every waking hour on another note i saw someone mention that this song is addressed to the listener- the fans. I do know he tends to introduce it at concerts by saying "this one is yours/ this one is for you" to the crowd. Although that could be because its the fans that made it a hit, and propelled REM's career, or because the fans feel more attached to the song than he does (i do know they didn't want to release it as a single because they didn't think it was that strong a song). I've also never really heard him speak of being particularly attached to the track. So I don't buy that. I feel this is about those odd times in a relationship when something happens or perhaps goes wrong and you're left trying to understand what happened, or you're confused as to what's going on with the other person. I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try And you want to know what to do- what you may have done wrong or what you have yet to say. And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough Let me know what y'all think. This will always be one of my favourite songs ever. Richard |

brilliant song- i like the lines: "Dreaming of Maria Callas, whoever she is/This fame thing, I don't get it". i like his view of the whole fame thing here, the idea of dreaming of someone when you don't know who they are, you've just seen or heard the name somewhere. i liked the music video too. can't explain why though. |

| this is one of my favourite songs ever, shame that i'm the first to write about it. at heart i think its a love song, told by someone in their mid or late stage of life. it makes use of a lot of peter pan imagery- (hooks- captain hook, tick tock- the alligator) and is about getting old and needing someone, and feeling useless without them. | |
