R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that some of the more recent commenters don't know that the singer of REM is gay, and hence he wouldn't be chasing after a girl. But I can understand how one would come to that conclusion when reading the lyrics without any background knowledge.

Honestly, the "you" he keeps referring to in this song I think is himself, before he came out of the closet. He's trying to keep up with his old "straight" self and trying not to lose who he thought he was. He's trying to maintain the facade that he's not actually gay, he's straight. And he's choosing his confessions so that he doesn't let anything slip, but eventually "[he's] said too much" and now he has to come to terms with what he really is.

Metallica – The Judas Kiss Lyrics 14 years ago
Well, just as clarification: James Hetfield grew up in a family that was mostly comprised of Christian Scientists which is NOT the same as a science-based Christian family. This is displayed in The God That Failed which talks about how his family prayed for his mother to overcome cancer and denied medical treatment because of their faith. I have no idea what James's position towards religion is, I'm just leaving this as a footnote. (could stop myself from correcting someone over the internet :P)

But yeah, I'm pretty sure this song is anti-religion.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Redemption Song Lyrics 15 years ago
"Old pirates, yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit"

Obviously this is an allusion to the slave trade. By the bottomless pits, I'm assuming he's referring to the terrible conditions underneath the decks of the ships which the slaves were transported with. These were terrible, unclean and filthy places, extremely hot and full of human suffering.

"But my hand was made strong
By the hands of the almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly"

Even through all his pain and suffering, he pulls through with the strength of God and the hope for a new future. A future where all of these things can be done away with.

"Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom
'cause they all I ever had
Redemption songs, redemption songs"

I think one of the lines is wrong here, but I'll interpret it anyways. Given the strength and will to live, he sings songs of freedom. In a sense, he's painting a future where pain and suffering don't need to be necessary. In times of great anguish, we must learn to pull through and find ourselves and hope when hope is most often abandoned.

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds"

Only our own mind can free ourselves, to give ourselves hope. By mental slavery, I assume he's talking about fear, fear for the future, fear of what might come. Fear that is intended to keep us complacent, often a tool of the strong to subjugate the weak.

"Have no fear for atomic energy
'cause none of them can stop the time"

By atomic energy, I don't think he's referring directly to atomic energy itself. Rather, he's talking about the things that instill fear into us, fear that can be overpowered directly through the endurance of the human spirit. Through all trials and tribulations, humans can endure, the seeds of new generations can be planted. Indeed, he is saying that absolutely nothing can stop us from pushing through in times of hardships. It is our own mental slavery that prevents us from hoping for a new future.

"How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book"

How long shall they demonize the bringers of truth? Throughout history, the people intending to enlighten the masses were often portrayed as evil, slandered horribly. More often than not, their own followers were too afraid to stand up for them, and they became martyrs for their cause. Some consider this process just to be part of the enlightenment, nonetheless he is saying that we have to fulfill the prophecies set forth in the book. What I believe he is referring to is the idea that when the end of the world comes, everyone will live in peace and harmony in heaven. I'm no religious person, but his message of equality for all men is something no person can refute.

"Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom
'cause they all I ever had
Redemption songs, redemption songs"

It is only us that can put in place this new utopian future. No one person can bring about this change, only the entire human race banded together can truly make the world free. We must all redeem the world, preach to the world our redemption songs.

Cypress Hill – Looking Through the Eye of the Pig Lyrics 15 years ago
Obviously it's about corruption in the police force these days. I'm surprised that Cypress made this song, but it's awesome so I don't care.

Cypress Hill – How I Could Just Kill A Man Lyrics 15 years ago
Eh... I like the song and all, it kicks ass, but I can't say I enjoy the lyrics. I'm not sure if Cypress Hill is endorsing murder or decrying it, but it seems to me like they're endorsing it. I mean, sure the kid that he kills was trying to steal his gun, but seriously? "Didn't have to blast him, but I did anyways, haha. Young punk had to pay." Every time I hear that, I just cringe inside for listening to the song. Don't get me wrong, I -love- Cypress Hill, but that's just terrible.

Maybe I'm wrong. I'd love to be wrong. Anyone know anything about this song?

Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Lyrics 15 years ago
Sounds like the CEO of a big company.

"Sweet dreams are made of this.
Who am I to disagree?" lots of money = sweet dreams

"I travel the world and the seven seas.
Everybody's looking for something." Everyone out there in the world is looking for something from you

"Some of them want to use you. Some of them want to be used by you.
Some of them want to abuse you. Some of them want to be abused." same thing

Also, in the music video, she's in like some sort of meeting room in a business suit.
