i think the 'sci-fi story' meaning may be a little too literal. i think he's using the idea of retreating to isolation as a symbol for his urge/longing to get away from society, or his actual success in doing so.
beautiful lyrics though. "against the surge of waves that held us, with that ancient grip beneath" is absolutely poetic. |

i would say the verses are reflecting on the hardships of life, and that the "evil angel", could be drugs or alcohol. "why can't i breath, evil angel?" sounds like his reliance on such escape is betraying him to a degree. |

absolutely right rhcp. this song is my favorite of theirs, and i'm really kind of glad to not see a bunch of peoples' different interpretations of the lyrics, regardless how straight-forward they are. |
