Porcupine Tree – Every Home Is Wired Lyrics 18 years ago
Thats a great thought you have there. Makes me feel a little depressed about myself.

I think not giving it "another layer of significance", which makes perfect sense by the way, might have been intended. Instead of portraying our "inevitable" future as a society, he does it on a simpler and more personal level. Leaves the listener to think and let it set in, and with the hope of change or at least awareness.

If i catch your drift with the falseness and diversions that we fill our lives with, I totally agree. I think many people do this with most of the things we do, and I think it is wayy to easy to float through life without self-questioning and avoiding matters that distract us from reality and the significance/beauty of life.
Basically we could all use a good dose of the short story "You can't take it with you" every once in a while.

That for sure, but I think it is also referring to the rich, famous, and powerful people in the newspapers, and the idea that they may be the ones who are really lunatics.
We have to examine the way things are done in society, politics and culture, and question the people that influence them.

By the way, since i am in such a cynical mood, it is impossible to enjoy the messages of early (and most) Floyd if you are a proud corporate exec with a lexus. Ahem, rock forty.
Most normal people couldnt even recognize humanity and the importance of our interconnectedness if it bit them in the ass.

Warr I think you are on to something with the moon/earth thing.
Waters states that this song and the album are about not letting our need for good and following the right path (an enlightened or righteous one) become eclipsed by all the shit that the album spends some time discussing. Wastes of time like money and war and selfishness are, as cliche as it sounds, what keep the majority of us from leading truly wholesome and liberated lives.

Is it about insanity, or the way people are viewed as insane (see stoner's comment).

Does anyone here truly know what insanity is? Do you know what happened in Barrett's head and why this means he is insane? Is insanity real and does the definition have anything to do with this song? I think not

Waters points to the "raise the blade/make the change" part and says that the song is about people not understanding those who are different and how they are unfairly changed and cast aside.

Description of society, government, people in general? Is he bitter about the fact that we are "waved into formation" as people to become a monstrous wolfpack? If he is, he has definitely left the pack at this point (which is a good thing)

Trippy stuff, but so true. I wish there was more of this stuff in mainstream culture.

I hate routine-- you take everything for granted and everything substantial in life becomes secondary to some of the things (aka shit) that we worry about.

We say that people who are good at math or at the top ranks of a corporation are smart and successful in life, but I'm leaning more towards people who can constantly recognize these philosophical kinds of things.

The song does not suck. Its good, especially towards the end. Just because a song is overrated, or cracked up to be more than it is, doesnt mean it sucks.

It might also be that we've lost sight of all of these basic things that make up our lives, and instead of appreciating them we are nuts because of worrying about money, time, obligations, war, etc.

People who are driven insane because they want something more from life than what we are "allowed" to do, or who just cant take the undue stress of such maddening things as money, war, success, death, etc. These people may be the ones who see the truth in life, but as a result they are seen as crazy.

"All that you touch, see, eat, meet, feel, etc. and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon"
All things in our lives have a higher meaning and are some kind of crazy order that could lead to truth and as you said about echoes folly, "goodness", but the idea of being viewed as insane, or the idea of not keeping up with society, forces us to ignore this and conform.

Pink Floyd – Money Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey Grind, I'd like to answer your questions if I may.
I sort of agree with you folly, but not totally.

1. I think the dark side of the moon is a metaphorical place where we send everyone we see as different or anyone who doesn't go with the normal flow of society. ie "And if the dam breaks open many years too soon / and if there is no room upon the hill (in an insane asylum) / and if your head explodes with dark foreboodings too / I'll see you on the dark side of the moon (banished by society, because you are seen as crazy)

2. I think the album deals with insanity in saying that it is really most people who are insane, and that maybe the ones who want to do things differently are sane, but they are sadly the ones who are seen as crazy. Everyone who is caught up in life's annoying issues and stressors that can easily consume us has lost sight of the beauty in life and what is really important. Us and Them deals with war, but it is also saying that there is a lack of compassion and understanding in our world, and that this is what causes such problems.
Floyd is telling us to worry about other people and our relationships and experiences, not our successes and mistakes and money and doing things before we die, etc. (from breathe: "dont be afraid to care" (about others), "look around, choose your own ground" (make uo your own mind about life, and dont get carried away with what others make you feel like you should do or think), "long you live and high you fly, smiles...tears...touch...feel, is all your life will ever be" (what is important in life arent all of the stressors covered in later tracks).

3. Heres my little take on the cover-- A small stream of white light moves through a prism and refracts into a rainbow of colors. But if you look at it backwards, it is a happy, rich array of colors that is squeezed into a boring, straight beam of light. The colors represent people as they want to be and should be, and the beam of light represents the way society and the frightening thought of being banished to the dark side of the moon make us conform and do and put emphasis on what we are expected to.

If echoes is about compassion and empathy, then I cans ee why Waters thought it was a good idea to put the whale noises in this song. Pink feels alone and detached, but he longs for people to feel the empathy for him that is expressed as an ideal in Echoes.

Pink Floyd – Breathe Lyrics 19 years ago
This song could very well be what all you guys have been talking about, but heres my take on it, and how it reltes to the whole album.

Lots of people have interpreeted DSoTM as addressing all the junk in life that we have to put up with, and/or that we will all be driven insane someday, etc. etc. But I think it is telling us not to get caught up in things. As for the insanity part of it, Floyd is talking about how people who don't do things the same way everybody else does, or who are brave enough to not follow the norms are VIEWED as insane, but not actually so. They are saying that it is really the majority of us who are all caught up in life's stressors who are crazy. I also think that they are trying to say that what we should be mainly worried about is each other, and to be compassionate. Us and Them, the centerpiece of the album, makes us realize that we dont think about other people or value others enough, and that is what causes wars and selfishness, obviously ("for want of the price of tea and a slice--of the 'money' pie?-- the old man died").

This song says to breathe (relax), and then says to not be afraid to care (dont be afraid to look outside your problems and care about others). It then tells us to choose our own ground (have our own ideas, don't think what everyone else thinks).

It then tells us that we will live long and fly high as a result of smiles and tears and feelings and contact with people, and that is what our life primarily consists of.

The next stanza observes our society as it is, not how it should be as stated above. Run rabbit run, dig that hole, forget the sun (we just keep going and going, without enjoying anything. We just go go go).

The next part seems to be a bit sarcastic. Floyd says that we will live long and fly high if we ride the tide (that we will have great lives if we do what everyone else does). But then balanced on the biggest wave, you race towards an early grave (we get too caught up in this idea of keeping up with where everyone else is going and forget what is important, and then we don't literally die faster, but our lives are less rich as a result)

The next song, On the Run, isn't just randomly a guy running throuhg the airport. He is rushing to get to his place (to keep up with our society's demands and strains), but when he gets there, the plane takes off and immediately crashes and explodes (the plane-- the rush of society that he wa trying to keep up with--crashed and burned, but he is probably thankful that he missed it. I think this is a metaphor telling us not to go after things like money/success, competition, and to keep what is important in life in mind)

I totally agree that this song describes a war. I think that the begining is the politics or disagreement that comes between people way before a war, and it always feels like celestial voices is just saying "ahhhhh what the hell have we done, why did we just kill and die because of something as simple as a disagreement, ahhhhhhhh sheeittttt"-- especially with david gilmour in live in pompeii

Pink Floyd – Eclipse Lyrics 19 years ago
This is how I generally see the 4 songs:

Us and Them: Direct descriptions of war, but I think the whole song is about how most of us don't value each other or empathize with each other enough-- we don't put ourselves in other people's shoes. The song goes over extreme cases, but I think it is true down to our smallest actions. There just isn't much value placed on doing this in our society.

Any colour you like: I picture this song more as a depressing transition to the end of the album than anything else. I think the title is trying to say that we think we are free to do what we want and to feel how we want in our lives, but we are really confined to straight laced norms, while our real desires would have us flying out of these social constraints. I've heard that the title came from Henry Ford's statement "you can have any color you like, as long as it's black". We think we are free to follow our desires, but we just don't notice that in reality we so tightly squished into "normality".

Brain damage: Pretty simple- insanity, and our views of the insane. Anybody who strays outside of our established norms from any color you like is viewed as insane and not even given a chance. "If there is no room upon the hill//I'll see you on the darkside of the moon"---anybody viewed as insane or abnormal will be banished to the dark side of the moon. I like it how water's says "if the dam breaks open many years TOO SOON", because it seems like what is happening to these "insane" people is going to happen to us all, but it just happens to the insane too soon. I don't exactly know what could be meant by what it is that happens too soon though.

Eclipse: Honestly i've never really figured out my personal little meaning for this song. The gist of it i guess i am getting is just that everything is in tune, related to everything else in our lives. OHHHHH just though of this. Maaayyybe PF is saying that all of these things are (obviously) under the sun, and our possibilities are endless (as in the saying about anything under the sun). But our actions, perceptions, feelings, aspirations, etc. are all governed by this looming possibility (the moon between us and the sun) that we could be viewed as nuts by everyone else, so we fit ourselves into a tight, normal, non-free pathway as we go through life.

whew, most of that came up on the spot, but it seemed to work pretty well. I just popped in the cd and stared at the lyrics. And i did put some thought into this too, its not mindless or unconected (to me anyways).

What is with all Pink Floyd "fans" attibuting all of their work to the descriptions and/or effects of an acid trip??? Why does it seem like nobody can listen to how deep and beautiful the (sometimes crazy or "trippy" sounding) music is without just thinking "ohh mannn, drug trip central"? I've never even done any psychadelic drugs before, and I can appreciate this kind of sound. It's dramatic and sounds really cool and emotional. Aren't humans capable of enjoying and understanding that kind of stuff without being on LSD or shrooms?? Uhhhhh I think so.

Apparently this is one of those threads where every single opinion stated is ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT.
Soooo, I'd just like to say that this song is not about war. It is the centerpiece for the DSoTM album. It is about humanity, and how important it is/how we dont think about it. A.k.a. are we really concerned with the things in life that are important? Or are we all just running around like rabbits "digging that hole, forgetting the sun"? Buy the making of the DSoTM dvd- it's worth it. They get at how the song, (and the album), evolve from the "echoes" theme- relating to empathy, humanity, etc all that good stuff.
Us and them, me and you, see what I mean? Very simple, but very tough to explain in words. More of a feeling than anything. Maybe thats why the interpretations are so mucked up. The song has elements of war, but only to help get at a larger theme.
And if youre saying "well that doesnt tie into the DSoTM theme at all", well its right after "money" and all the other shit that drives people up a wall without them knowing it, and right before actually going mad. Maybe its the one notion the album gives us about how the world should be running? With awareness of and response to others, and not just focus on all the other shit that weighs about an ounce when put beside the concept of other people.

I'm expecting a full on disagreement from you folly

By the way I read through all of the comments and im sure the exact phrase "this song is about war" was said over 50 times.
