The chorus of the song is about having a breakdown that was caused by his own actions, but it's easier to for him to blame it on things that were out of his hands and brush it off than to take control of something he caused.
Verse 1 could mean going to rehab, or a mental hospital, or even being homeless and realizing that he's going no where and feeling empty. And at that moment you decide whether your going to change that or just give up.
During the second verse I think he means that when he pretended things from the past didn't happen and he tried to live with denial, it was impossible because he knew the truth and that he needed help and was going to take control of his life because he wasn't going to let his problems kill him.
Verse 3, my personal favorite lyrics of all time, is in my opinion realizing you had it good. Then little by little you grew up and experienced things too fast. And even though it was good at the time you miss that feeling of wonder and specialness. But now it's impossible to feel that because you've felt it all before and it didn't go anywhere good. |
