I think this song has a bit of a double meaning. The religious parable makes sense, particularly in connection with Backslider. At the same time, it is definitely also referring to evolution. We as humans evolved from primitive sea creatures.
I think it's actually a conflicted song about the search for spirituality and a feeling of oneness with the world in the face of religion. "I come from the water" plays off both the idea of baptism and original sin (man being born of purity, but then becoming corrupted and "backsliding") as well as the idea that we evolved out of primitive life and have a desire to return to the simplicity and purity of that oneness and connection with the universe. |

Forst of all, there are definitely some errors in the lyrics, particularly in the second verse.
Also, I think there's the issue of hope, obviously, but I also think that this song has a bit of a philosophical and religious element as well. He is questioning God and our purpose in life. I suppose it's saying that even though you don't have the answers, hang on and you'll find the answers. |
