This is a powerful movie and the songs fit right in. Origins of Love is especially powerful. This goes deeper than stereotypical gay/trans movies. The guy gets the operation to escape East Berlin with a US soldier. S/he gets to the states only to have him leave her for another young boy... while she watches the Berlin wall fall down. Ya gotta feel for her. |

I’ve really enjoyed reading the posts here. I don’t know how old you all are, but as a 48 year old mother of a young adult (who introduced me to the song) I see it as growing older – and wiser. Yes, starting over. Yes, getting past hard times. Yes – I see the drug references. That’s the song writer’s personal reality reflected in the song. There are multiple meanings on so many levels that the song is accessible to many to interpret in the context of their own lives. It’s an amazing song. The more I see the less I know The more I like to let it go… This is the wisdom part – as you get older, you realize that there is more to know than you could ever know. Realizing you don’t know everything finally gets you to the point of acceptance – letting go. Even when you don’t agree with people, you realize that they are coming from a different reality – a different set of knowledge. And you let go. Live and let live. To each his own. You become less judgmental (I’m actually still trying to get there!) Privately divided by a world so undecided And there’s nowhere to go I saw this as the state of the USA or even the world, which is so polarized and divided by religion and politics. But it’s the only world we have. And there is no where to go but here. Come to believe that I better not leave Before I get my chance to ride Life’s short. Not as much left as their used to be. I’m gonna be really pissed if I die before I get a chance at the life I really want. I’d better take care of myself – whether that’s cutting out drugs or taking care of yourself in more mundane ways for longer life (no smoking, lose weight, exercise...) There’s a saying that if I’d known I’d have lived this long, I’d have taken better care of myself! |
