The Dresden Dolls – Ultima Esperanza Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know much Spanish, but I think it means "Last Hope". This suggests that the people doing internet dating have been unsuccessful in other kinds of relationship and the net is their last chance of finding true love (so they think).

The Dresden Dolls – The Jeep Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This song always makes me laugh, too. Has anyone NOT been here before?

The Dresden Dolls – Slide Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitely found this one of the most disturbing songs I've ever heard. At first I thought it was about paedophilia too, but I reckon that this is yet another case of one image being used for a totally different theme.

Is anyone else reminded of Little Red Riding Hood ("a little red girl")? This is often seen seen as a coming-of-age/ sexual initiation story, possibly involving force, which seems similar to at least one interpretation of this song.

I think that it might be about a lost childhood through being too precocious, perhaps like "The Perfect Fit". This is suggested by the phrase "left the playground...before the bell rang", which could be compared with the "skipping years" in TPF. If this is so, I guess the Orange Man (who I'm sure is nothing to do with the Orange Order) might represent ambition, with the coins being her greed to start earning a lot of money, thus losing out on childhood. I'm also quite convinced by the idea of heroin addiction in the last verse; maybe this shows how she went off the rails, again like in TPF.

I'm afraid I don't know much about Amanda's own life. Is it known that she was abused as a child? Otherwise, I find it more likely that someone who has become such a clever song writer experienced some level of precociousness leading to a lessened childhood.

The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
Firstly, I'd like to agree with everyone who has pointed out, in connection with other songs too, that Amanda is a brilliantly clever lyricist whose songs work on numerous levels, often having very different meanings for different people in different circumstances. This is what makes the Dresden Dolls such an amazing band: they give the listener the opportunity to THINK about what their songs mean and about the issues associated with them, rather than just 'preaching' a clear opinion.

In connection with that, just because this is a song about loneliness/ relationships/ balance of power or whatever, it does not mean that this cannot be expressed through comparison to a sex-toy (dildo, inflatable etc). Amanda has done this in other songs too, especially 'First Ogasm', which quite unambiguously DESCRIBES masturbation, but is really ABOUT loneliness.

Also, while I'm here, I particularly like the phrase "he feels like a boy should feel". If, for the sake of argument, we take this emotionally and in the context of a COMPARISON to a sex toy, which would clearly not 'feel' anything, this offers an interesting reversal of the stereotypical view of the female as a passive sex object (maybe compare with "the Shores of California"?). It suggests her empowerment in the relationship.
