No no no no.
This song (as well as the album name and cover) is not only about the existence of a god (or higher power, whatever) but also about love. As far as the Christian religion is concerned god IS love, so your lover can also be a god. Thom is an artist, he knows how to put as many or as few themes into a song as he wants to. If you listen to the breakdown around 1:52 in stereo speakers and close your eyes, you'll get a sensation of something moving around you. I hate to admit that I was high when I discovered this but it's true when I'm sober and when I'm drunk (like right now). In my opinion Thom could be saying many things when he give us this sensation. What I think he's saying is that whoever this being is, it/he/she is ALL around you and that you are obsessed with the existence of this person; but art is totally open to interpretation; So me, you, and everyone you know may not now at all what he's trying to say. I certainly ended up in this song. I mean, if you look at the cover art, it's a tall man in a black trench coat hands outreached and waves of deathly water taking down cities, doesn't that look like a god to you (or someone trying to play god [through science, politics, etc.])?? Uugh.. I'm done trying to make myself clear, if you have comments you can email me at mattistrees@gmail.com cause I don't know if I'll come back to this. |

Ive Changed my mind, I think this song is more about religion now, or maybe just a general song about how things can bring you down. I dont really know. |

I think this son is about a "Black sheet boy" that sees a former lover and is trying his hardest to coax her into comming back to him. It also helps to explain that everyone can be a black sheep boy in their own way. The end gives me the chills also, every time. |

In response to ripelivejam, i think that no one has commented this song is because most of the lyrics are pretty straight forward, with a few exceptions. For some reason, the lyrics to this song remind me of a picture for Korn, where a boy with a blank stare smiles as this rabbit-man creature hands him a teddy bear without a head. You can tell that the boy had seen some "messed up" things.. perhaps the concept of that picture is similar to this song... Growing up, what a shity drag. |

The song (and obviously, the whole album) is about being a total fuck up, but you can still be a beautiful person no matter of your hide ("And theres plenty of ways to wear his hide, tonight" and "...the black sheep can wear the golden fleece, And hold a winning hand"). |

I always thought this song was about war and/or fighting. Were tired of being tough, and we dont need to prove anything, especially not our egos.. but that is all explained in the first line and one of the last lines. |

I agree to most of these comments.. but i think that a stone isnt limited to another guy that doesnt care. I think that a stone could be anything that would distract you from seeing whats really good for you (mostly love i guess). examples of Stones: White veins (possibly heroine?), hard grey (not sure, maybe just bland-ness, unexiting people), heaviest weight (weightlifting, manly-ness), clumsiest shape (art), earthiest smell (possibly pot, or nature), the hollowest tone (obviously music, possibly empty, meaningles music). |
