I have a little different take on Sober.
I feel that it's about some type of clergyman (priest, reverend, etc.) who is slowly drifting away from his or her faith. With the lines that start "I am" and "I will", he/she is deprecating theirself because they are preaching something that they don't believe in. When it says "Jesus won't you fucking whistle?" and "Mother Mary won't you whisper?" I think he/she is stressing their doubts of the existance of God. |

I think that this song is about a person who is very unhappy in life, and then one day they meet this great person [whether it be just a friend or a lover] and that person really changes things for the better; however, they eventually grow apart and the author is back where he/she started. "Shattered by the sun" can be a metaphor for "hurt by something you trust", ie a close friend |
