| Placebo – Nancy Boy Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Hmm... surfing around looking for lyric stuff and came across this. To me it would seem that bigguy44 is about the closest to the underlying signifiers that seem to be dotted about the song. The the general driving beat under the minor chord riff underscores the story. I would think that the initial verse sets the scene for a character that is certainly engaged in regular casual sex ("different partner every night") and that finds the general scene ennverating ("so narcotic") The chorus refers to a Muse, not to a woman - although the feminine aspect could relate to gender blurring - of course, it is traditional for the Muse of any artist to be feminine. There's a 'romance' of some sort going on. This is likely to be an ongoing sexual relationship where the main character is infatuated or in love with the 'nancy boy'. This 'nancy boy' is probably closeted: "Does his makeup in his room", "kind of guy who mates for life gotta help him find a wife" The next line seals it for me, with regards to the relationship that exists. "we're a couple, when our bodies double" - this shows that they are engaged in a sexual relationship and that the narrator is in love or at least infatuated with the desire to also help him find a wife. Of course, there is also a long standing tradition in the UK of straight-acting gay men. I suspect that the chorus' referral to "it all breaks down at the role reversal" relates to the main characters predatory ways which are disarmed when involved with the 'nancy boy'. So, I would think that the song is actually about a sexual predator that falls for a closeted boy. Overall the theme of the tune is one of desparation interspersed with elements of elation. Identifying the narrator with Molko seems right - but I think that some of the other comments about it being about freedom of sexuality a little off target as there is an automatically assumed freedom of sexuality in much of Placebo's music. The other theme that is laced through the song hints at the empty come-down feelings that go hand-in-hand with a good time. That's my two cents. Cheers, BC |
