| what jim morrison is actually referring to when he says "trade in your hours for a handful dimes" is heroin. a dime is a standard amount of heroin that you can purchase, and i think in this song he is speaking about how frustrated he was with his audience. they all came to see him be a wild, crazy pre former, not an artist. and i think he was telling them that they can be as wild and intense and radical as they want, but when it comes down to it, thats all they will ever have. their drugs and their complaints. he felt they didnt appreciate him as they poet he really was, they only saw what he represented to the older generations. | |

| from reading his biographies, i think jim morrison believed we were all kind of like hitchhikers. we all have some vague destination in our minds, but no means or ideas of how to achieve it. we wait for someone who can take us there, but we can never be sure. i think think poem talks about how fragile the human race is. how easy it is to kill, to hurt. the only thing stoping us is our minds, our conscience. | |

to me this song is about opening your mind and pushing the boundaries of reality. maybe through drugs, but more as a frame of mind, thinking differently about life. he writes, "Let's swim to the moon, uh huh Let's climb through the tide Penetrate the evenin' that the City sleeps to hide" i think he's saying that he wants to live in the world that people hide from and neglect. just like the city sleeps through the night, they sleep through the mind set and thought process that morrison wants to embrace and experience. |
