When this album came out this automatically became my favorite shins song just for the many allusions to certain aspects of life and judgement... the first verse to me represents how he wants to be a good guy and not be stuck in the clouds or his thoughts and the very next verse after it tells you through people he associates with he's not sure of the message they try to convey and therefore questions his own values he grew up with... the next verse "close...failure" shows you that he trys to take in what he heard, but is not sure if this "value" will lead him to failure or happiness... the next verse really shows you how much metaphors are tied in to the shins lyrics... we can blow on our thumbs and postures... thumbsucking i'm pretty sure was based on some freudian theory which said the reason people do it is because a longing for something, the longing is said to be of the womb and the mother... that must represent lonliness and posture would obviously derive from body language, head down, feeling bad... so this creates a picture of a lonely man feeling depressed longing for something... which would seem a good topic for a song... the whole verse to me means... those who are sensitive... if theres no need to interact with others than you will lose your sense of love which is nicely symbolized by the stones on the feet idea... the next mini verse simply reinforces the past verse and tells you what happens if you remain apathetic for a long period of time... now the next verse i sort of drew from real life... i hate to say this but based on the words it can actually represent usage of salvia or weed... burnt sage and a forest of bygones... things you learn to let go from possibly being high, and unless it's even deeper than that, "sage" is a dead giveaway... he looks for something to blame the problems he is faced with, maybe the sage is what he blames a lot of his strife on... the last line of that verse ties it up and says maybe he is just thinking too much, while somehow still having some faith in his lifestyle... the next verse is very mystical and i definetley think it's about the moon... mercer had insomnia problems so "with each turn", might be moving around thinking while he's trying to sleep... and while he's up something always seems to hit him front and center like a dart in his eye... maybe the thought was here that astrology might be a way to live your life... even though it may be composed of lies, it may still hold wisdom you might gain in the future... also a pie in the sky... would mean the moon i suppose... well, this took a few nights of listening to but i think i hvae a deeper understanding of what is going on... just like everyone else said haha... a man is lonely and not sure what to do or sure how to live his life... he relys on the philosophies of the afterlife to find a path in his life now... and he knows it's hard to do it sometimes, but having faith does not guarrantee you everything you want... which is what he questions... ah nice... |

In my experience I have been pushed to points of insanity where I have actually lost my mind and almost became trapped in a machine like world where you start to notices not just how companies, but how everything around you controls something less or greater. When I would walk around a simple ad or sticker might bring about a symbolic effort of control on the people. What does this all mean? Certain lyrics in the songs body gave away the meanings of this song to me. When growing children are provided with numerous ways to achieve success as adults through programs which better purify their thinking and logical skills. To me the pipeline may be just that process in action. Provided with toys and scouting for boys. To me this is an example of how the machine will give you different paths you can take to achieve a differnt way or career in life. Scouting is obviusly a tool for those who usually conform to scoiety very early in their lives to help benefit society in some way. Provided with toys could possibly mean whoever was provided with a good family setting and therfore maybe a middle class home where the parents may have been present. You bought a guitar to punish your ma is an easy example of how the rebellious counterculture changed against older generations in the time this song was written. You didn't like and, nobodys fool, showed that this person knew there was something else in life to do being you needed education for most good jobs or career tracks. So welcome to the machine show(the lyric) examplifies how upstanding youth citizens will give up a glory filled life to drop out and reach for dreams of superstardom or rebellious activity. We told you what to dream shows how the control of the person gets them from youth all the way to death, through possibly the media and shows how the media wraps itself around at a young age and continues to ravage you into having these star sticken dreams. They told you what to dream, it's not like you had a choice. You can't dream about things you want to dream about it's what you see in your subconscious that controls that. Which can be eveything from the ads to the subliminal messages you think you didn't see. He played a mean guitar and the next following lines show that when you get good you take things for granted. You live the higher life and tend to forget about family and things that made you famous in your own mind. The steak bar and the jaguar examplify a luxorius life, obviously. In my words that what the machine is, a mechanism to provide the youth an option of where to go in life. You could live an upstanding life, become rich, or you could take an easier way and sell out your soul to the machine which controlled your life from the beginningw without your knowledge. The machines makes musicians because we have been there before, when you look around without any hope and see symbolism in absoulutely everything hoping that maybe someday it will acomadate your abundant thoughts that won't seem go away and haunt you for the rest of your life, this my friends is what the machine is to me... |
