Millencolin – The Ballad Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree, everyone can relate to this song, whether they know "that guy", whether they were "that guy" or whether they may have been one of the people putting "that guy" down. Possibly even all three at some point or other in their lives.

I just listened to it again today, since the last time I heard it was years ago... and I cried. I completely lost any semblance of composure at "You'll be someone they will look up to", especially because it can be hard to believe things will ever change when you've been everybody's chew-toy for so long.

@man on tv

It helps to read the lyric booklet. Especially the italicized parts that explain what is going on in the story. Staging directions, almost.

As that part starts, it's a loudspeaker. ("words to quell a potential uprising. Words to inspire fear. Words to drive back the idea that freedom is within the grasp of one angry mob headed by one unstoppable leader. One perfect Machine")

But for the last part, as the chant picks up strength and more voices, it is the human choir that says it. ("The voices of the men and women carry him forward. Megaman has no fear.")

The Protomen – The Will of One Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, what a mess was made of the lyrics. Instead of following my usual format, I'm going to post the correct version first and THEN my comments.

MEGAMAN:

I have seen this city a thousand times.
Through the glass twenty stories high
I have watched this city burn.
If everything that you said is true,
There is no hope someday they will learn.

But if I stay here with you,
Then I will never know the truth.
Do not say this is how it has to be.

But as I walk through the city streets,
These frightened people watching me pass,
There is an evil that holds them here
And yet they won't try breaking its grasp.

But if I stay here with you
Then I will leave them to their doom.
Do not say this is how it has to be.
You do no better than the fools of this burning city.

(VOICE OF DR. LIGHT IN BACKGROUND)/MEGAMAN:
(You have heard me tell this story...) Even here, it is not safe.
(Many times before you sleep...) Even this grave has been defaced.
(No matter how dark this city gets...) Someone has written on this stone
(Even now, there's hope for man.) In some angry hand:

Hope rides alone. (x3)

(LOUDSPEAKERS IN BACKGROUND: We have control, we keep you safe, we are your hope.) ((Repeat until the human choir takes over these words, somewhere around "As I live, there is no evil that will stand..."))

If you say this is how it has to be
You'll do no better than the fools of this burning city
But as I live, there is no evil that will stand
And I will finish what was started: The fight of Protoman!

HUMAN CHOIR:

We have control
We keep you safe
We are your hope!

((Repeat until end of song. This then blends into the "We are in control!" that begins the next track, "Vengeance".))

Megaman has had enough with the destruction that has befallen the city. He knows that if he stays with Dr. Light, he will never know the truth. He knows the citizens of the city are terrified, yet they will not rebel against whatever evil keeps them there. Megaman is not willing to accept whatever 'fate' would be if he obeyed Light's request that he not fight. If this were to be the case, Light would be no better than the cowards of the city.

The "You have heard me tell this story" part are the words Dr. Light had carved on the marker of Protoman's 'grave', where Proto's helmet was placed during "Funeral For A Son" (the second track of the album).

The "even here, it is not safe" part is Megaman's comments as he is reading the marker. He realizes that there is no sacred place in the city, that all would be destroyed under Wily. He notices that someone has scrawled across the marker the words "Hope Rides Alone".

The loudspeakers begin blaring the words "We have control, we keep you safe, we are your hope" in an attempt to prevent Megaman from stirring up a rebellion. Whoever is controlling these speakers wants the crowds turned against Megaman.

But Megaman is determined. He will finish what Protoman has started. He will save mankind. There is no evil that will stop him, and he has rallied some (The human choir that chants the same words "We have control...") to his cause.

Now for my more liberal interpretations of certain parts of the song...

The "truth" Megaman wishes to know... possibly about his own purpose, or maybe the truth about Protoman.

Dr. Light's words "No matter how dark this city gets, even now there's hope for man..." perhaps refer to Megaman, though Light has become bitter since then and refuses now to let Megaman be that hope.

I like to think that Protoman himself scrawled the words "Hope rides alone" upon his own 'grave'. It's possible, given his return in the very next song... and given the first song's title. I believe what was meant is that there is no one who will help Megaman fight, just as there was no one to help Protoman. ((Also, I applaud the vocalist's ability to hit that note.))

The Protomen – The Sons of Fate Lyrics 19 years ago
First, interpretations. Then corrections. Then final thoughts.

Anyway, first bit is pretty obvious. Megaman refuses to fight, Protoman says he has no choice. Megaman still believes there is some good left in humanity and in Protoman. Protoman believes they are all fools.

Second bit, Protoman addresses the crowd. No more second chances. No more heroes. I'm not going to save you again. Nobody will, because you're too weak to help yourselves.

Third bit, the crowd is ticked. They believe Protoman, Protoman who was once their hero, is evil and readily turn against him. Yet they refuse to do anything for themselves, and want Megaman to finish this.

Fourth, Protoman (as he is dying) has what I call an "Anakin Skywalker" moment. Perhaps there is some hope, some good that will come of this. They just have to see it for themselves.

Fourth, the crowd attempts to persuade Megaman that he has done the 'right thing' in killing Protoman. That he had no other choice. That he shouldn't be upset about it. Yet for the crowd's reaction, Megaman turns his back on them. Maybe his brother was right after all.

The last bunch of "we are the dead"s are the crowd despairing because, just like in "Hope Rides Alone", their hero has left them and they will fall under Wily.

Interesting to note that over the course of the album, every character undergoes some drastic change in personality.

Now, for the corrections. This one is messed up enough that I might as well just post the entire song. The parts between hyphens indicate who's singing in a particular stanza, and who's in parentheses.

-MEGAMAN/(PROTOMAN)-

I will not fight you (You have no choice)
I'll stand beside you (I stand alone)
You're still their hero (Then they are fools)
This cannot be the only way (You will see...)
They don't deserve this (When this is through)
Now more than ever (Mankind will fall)
We are their hope (They would not stand)
They know no better (They would not fight)
They are not ready (They never will)
Even now there is hope for man (My father's words?)
Your father loved you (He still believes?)
His heart was broken (His only weakness)
His greatest strength (Now we shall see...)
You are not evil (...if they will stand)
You are not broken (...beside their hero!)
We both know they'll never fight! (You finally get it.)
(There are no heroes. Mankind is doomed.)

(You will never have another hero! You will never have another chance! You will fall, because you never tried to stand for yourselves!)

-(CHOIR)-

(Destroy him!
You can save us! (+Destroy him!)
You're our only hope! (+ Destroy him!)(+You can save us!)
Kill Protoman!)

-PROTOMAN-

If these people... Tell this story...
...To their children... As they sleep...
...Then maybe someday... They'll see a hero...
...Is just a man... Who knows he's free...

-(CHOIR)/MEGAMAN-

(He could not save himself.)
(How could he save us?)
(For all the blood he shed) And as I live
(Your brother failed us) There is no evil that will stand
(There's nothing you could do) And I will finish
(You had no choice) What was started
(Why do you cry for him?) The fight of Protoman!
(You are our hero.)
(You are our hero!)
You are the dead.

(We are the dead!) ((x10))

Yes, I did listen hard enough to determine that "We are the dead" is repeated ten times. (Side note: That's the same number of times it was repeated in "Hope Rides Alone".)

dragonflyeyes wrote: 'The brass line during "What can you see on the horizon?" gives me chills every time.'

On the subject of that line... We played this song in band two years ago. Since I was the only one who played the French Horn at the time, that line was basically my solo. It was probably the best I'd ever played that instrument... or the best I'd ever felt playing it.

The Protomen – The Stand (Man or Machine) Lyrics 19 years ago
My absolute favorite Protomen song.

The spoken bit at the beginning is Dr. Light explaining the situation to Megaman- that he cannot both save mankind and avenge Protoman's death, because the one he seeks to destroy and the one he seeks to avenge are indeed the same man... robot... whatever. They're both Protoman.

Protoman, then, tells Megaman to give up on saving humanity because the people are all cowards who will rely on a "hero", and would let Megaman die just as they had let Protoman "die" in the first song.

((And by the way a few corrections:

Line #4 is "And you see now, you cannot do both."
Line #19 is "They called me their hero, the Hero of Man"
Line #21 is "If they deserve life, let them stand for themselves."
Line#26 is "So let them watch as we decide"))
