Beautiful is the only way to describe this song, absolutely beautiful! The genius of the song lies in its depth. At first it sound like an old style ballard while underneath there's a menacing undercurrent of violence and chaos. It makes me relate to my own experiences of smoking pot and hiding away from the world with my friends, cocooned in a heavenly fug of weed, pizza, video games, dvd's, tv & above all cool music. It can seem that the world is going mad while we enjoy endless nights of bliss. It's not so hard to imagine the Mamas & Papas in a similar scenario. Take away the mod cons and add the the hippie ideology and political chaos of the late sixties and you've got a very similar picture. I know the M + P's loved the reefer watched TV endlessly and the references to the 'ancient flower' , 'scent from its nature' and 'causing me to swoon' make me think of weed. Whether it is or isn't doesn't matter but I love this song and it means a lot to me. |
