Kate Bush – Oh England My Lionheart Lyrics 19 years ago
I adore this song...I'm not even English but I think in a way anyone can relate to the imagery in the song, the pilot fondly remembering the wonderful things about his homeland contrasted with his fall from his Spitfire. It could be about any person struck by terror and danger wishing desperately for safety and the way things used to be.

That said, it does of course have a level quite personal to the artist, referring so specifically to England.

Kate Bush – Coffee Homeground Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know about this being a song about paranoia. It's more of a playful homage to crime writing and murder mysteries, maybe the kind of literature Kate Bush could have been reading at the time? She sees herself as the heroine in a gothic/crime novel, but a smarter version refusing the killer's offer of coffee.

Dire Straits – Money For Nothing Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song really captures a slice of life for people who would be usually sort of passed over (I mean, if you're having a microwave delivered, how much small talk do you make with the guy who brings it?). The protagonists are pondering what they could have done if they'd gone into music-an easy way to make cash, great lifestyle. So it's pretty cool and the lyrics are better than they're given credit for. That said they're completely shallow too, no hidden layers. Refreshing in a way...and the music compensates completely anyway.

I adore this song, it's one of their best overall. A real anthem against sanctimoniousness, fakeness and pretension.

Soundgarden – Burden in My Hand Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know why people think this is about the military, there's not a lot to suggest that.

I think the character in the song is in the desert and burning sun of his own alcoholism. It's destroying him and he refuses to drink water, i.e face his problems. The woman is being dragged into it purely because she cares about him and is trying to help him, but he eventually loses her because she has to escape or she'll end up destroyed. Shooting is purely a metaphor for how he is ruining her chances of happiness.

Then he warns others not to end up the same through the sarcastic 'kill your health, and kill yourself' line...perhaps Cornell was admonishing the fans who want to live a rock n roll lifestyle too?

Tsing Tao does a much better explanation...

U2 – Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me Lyrics 19 years ago
Definitely agree with Keyser Sushi on this one, the public demand that their idols crash and burn, go completely beyond unreasonable behaviour, even die, purely to hold their interest. That's how stars become icons and transcend simply being performers or decent songwriters.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Today Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is about how he never thought he could have a day as great as this and the way it turned out was totally unexpected, but for the best in the end. He wanted things he couldn't have or that were emotionally destroying him but now it's just perfect...

I know it's a kind of face value reading but that's how I see it. I listen to it whenever something good occurs that I naver saw coming, but brightened me up.
