Elliott Smith – New Monkey Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about Elliott's frustration with the corporate music world and the demand that it places on artists.
Artists create beautiful timely works, and the corporate world seems to stress the "quantity before quality" theme.

"Anything is better than nothing"
-his repetition of this line makes me believe that he is trying to convince himself this. maybe he is telling himself that he is fortunate to be making music as a profession and that this is better than nothing, who knows?

"pumping out the product"
-Gives elliott a machine like property. A mindless machine that is just pumping out mindless material.

"Though I might be straight as an arrow
He’s busy shaking hands with my monkey"
-Elliott can see what the corporate world is doing to him but all his bosses ever do is feed that monkey on his back. Press him to produce more and more.

------------------------------------------

Elliott is relating the corporate music world to a form of drug use. His bosses are junkies, they want money no matter what the costs are. Meh, my 2cents.

Two Gallants – Waves of Grain Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about imprinting one's ideals, assimilation, upon others. Eventually we are all the same; we are all one brick in the wall. What happens if those ideals are wrong?

Taking Back Sunday – What's It Feel Like to Be a Ghost? Lyrics 19 years ago
"After a while, the girl's subserient behavior the guy begins to take advantage of it. He asks her, "What's it feel like to be a ghost?" sadistically because he sees her as technically a being, but not necessarily alive. "Are you up for this?" is a rhetorical question, because he knows that if he is... she is."

-The guy begins to take advantage of the girl's subservient behavior. When he tests her to find out her reaction mechanisms she breaks down. This a key point in the relationship, as he sees he can establism dominance.

Sorry, I wish there was an edit button. If there is, that just reflects my noobness to songmeanings.net. GG me. Kthxbye.

Taking Back Sunday – What's It Feel Like to Be a Ghost? Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about a relationship between a guy and girl, obvioiusly. Whether the guy is the lead singer or not, the meaning remains the same. I will keep my analysis short and sweet.

"And then you said a little more
About your dreams like that was my call (my call)
If you would only listen
Bypass everything and
Went straight for the neck"
-When the girl and the guy meet for the first time, he just wants to get some. The girl, however, wants to tell him about herself and sees him as somebody she can connect with.

"I study
We're studied
Up nightly
Dragged you out into the street
Before you buckled at your knees (buckled at your knees)"
-The guy begins to analyze the girl's behavior, natural for two strangers to do. When he tests her to find out her reaction mechanisms she breaks down. This is a key point in the relationship, as he sees he can establism dominance.

"Whats it feel like to be a ghost?
(louder now, louder now)
So whats it feel like to be a ghost?
Are you up for, are you up for this?
(Well are you up for, are you up for..)
Are you up for, are you up for this?
(Well are you up for, are you up for..)"
-After a while, the girl's subserient behavior the guy begins to take advantage of it. He asks her, "What's it feel like to be a ghost?" sadistically because he sees her as technically a being, but not necessarily alive. "Are you up for this?" is a rhetorical question, because he knows that if he is... she is.

"I said so look closely there might be something you'd like
What was it like
Oh and I...
Look so close its been months who knows if I
Will get this right
Oh and I..
Look so closely there might be something you'd like
What was it like
Oh and I..."
-This part of the song remains shady to me. I think that this is the point in the relationship when they have sex for the first time. I think this is one of the conversations leading up to it, and the guy keeps asking her if there is anything she'd like to say. While all he is thinking is sex, all she wants to do is talk but he keeps cutting her off. I arrive at this conclusion because of all the, "oh and I...."'s inserted in this particular part.

Yeah, I really don't listen to TBS at all, but I love this song. I like any song like this, where the meaning is a tad extreme and racy, I can't necessarily say why I am this way. I am not an asshole to girls or in general, it just appeals to me.
