I agree with tackledspoon's interpretation. It's really the only way to make sense of this song. You guys need to look deeper, specifically into yourselves. |

I think the narrorator of this song is in love with his best friend. It seems that he likes being seen with her due to the fact that people assume that they are a couple. This leads him to fantasize about what a relationship with her ceould b like, and since its just a fantasy, everything is perfect. It's always July and there are no problems as long as her arms are around him. |

My favorite lines
"all you can do now is watch the shells,
the game looks easy, thats why it sells"
He's using the shell game as a metaphor, he paid price to play, and now all he can do is watch the shells (his life) get mixed up. The game looks easy refers to the industry or perhaps the act he is playing in his career. It looks easy and thats why everyone wants to be a apart of it, not really knowing what its about. |

I think in the first verse the statue is him performing to a crowd "attention looking back," and while maybe this is what he's always wanted, there's a voice inside him (the blue song bird) telling him that none of this really means anything to him. |

Considering the album is about his divorce, I think this song is about his infidelity. He probably started to experiment with cheating on his wife ("I wonder how far down it goes"), but he soon lost control of the situation and hit bottom, and of course while it may have seemed fine before hand, he soon regretted it. |
