This entire song is about dreams of a girl the narrator has a crush on but can't have.
- The first verse is about how much he likes her
- The second verse begins a "dream," in which the narrator dances with the girl.
- The main chorus is the narrator lamenting upon waking up that none of it is real.
- The "only in dreams!" part is him releasing this frustration.
- I believe the cascading guitar riff being played over the bass line and quieting drum following this section is the narrator falling asleep and beginning to dream again.
- And finally, I had the realization the other day that the build-up/crescendo represents this last dream, in which this time the narrator and the girl have sex, building up tension to the orgasm and finish at the end which is the final guitar solo. The fadeout and concluding bass line is the narrator sadly waking up from the end of this sex dream, again realizing that it isn't real.
Blew my mind that I never thought of that before. The build up is totally about sex. |

Same. I think this song is basically just telling young people to stop spending so much time worrying about their future and to enjoy the present ("you'll be glad when you get older that you were happy for today"). It's similar to the Ferris Bueller quote: "Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around once and a while, you could miss it."
Sweet says it doesn't matter if you don't know what you want to be when you're grown up, or if you don't know what you ultimately want to do with your life. That will all work itself out eventually, so you should stop to enjoy your present situation in life because you will not be able to go back to it. I wish I had found this song earlier, because the "you'll be glad when you get older that you were happy for today" would have been my senior quote. It's so true, people these days are so overworked and overstressed because there is so much pressure on them to be overachievers. Do what feels right to you, everything will be fine in the end. |

i think the second chorus was obviously taken out of the 70's show theme song because no TV network is going to air a theme song promoting pot. it is stupid since the show has tons of scenes where they are smoking it, even though they don't actually show it

I think the "if you need rest, I'll keep your nest changeless" part means that the speaker will always be willing to go back to the past/home and resume the friendship whenever his friends want to, if it is possible. He'll keep what they had exactly the way they left it, and if they ever want a break from their current lives and are looking for a nostalgic return, they can always come back. True friendship is eternal. |

God damn this song makes parts of me inside really sad. It really is hard to believe that I'm already through high school and halfway done with college, and aside from a few isolated events, I'll never see most of my friends from the two places ever again after graduation. Of course, we'll all make new friends after losing our current ones, but it's always so hard to let go of what you've had for so long in exchange for the uncertainty the future brings. This is best song I've ever heard covering the "graduation/splitting up theme"- it does it without resorting to cheesy lyrics, and instead does an incredible job of capturing the emotion of that moment with the ever-present, droning bass line that underscores the entire song and smart lyrics. Well done, Carbon Leaf. |

On the version that's on the Red Album, they added a really cool touch by putting a lone snare drum hit to symbolize the gunshot that kills the pig after the last "i played with my friends in the mud" line, right as it goes quiet for a moment |

This song reminds me of a couple friends of mine who started smoking a ton of weed in high school. I wouldn't have really cared, except for the fact that they let it completely take over their lives and let it wreck any chance they had of getting into any college and actually doing something with their lives other than moving downtown to start dealing themselves. It's a shame, really. They were both pretty smart, too. |
