I agree with sapphire (7/24) and nopurple (8/8). He's still in love with her and has not (yet) been unfaithful to his 'girl' - who incidentally could be his g/f, his wife, or his fiancee. The term 'girl' doesn't really explain the status of their relationship. So if they are married, engaged and/or have a kid(s) he knows he can't leave... but wishes sometimes that SHE was the one in the other room (but also realizes that it would mean not having his child(ren), which is why it's only sometimes). Bottom line is, he knows he doesn't feel this way about his 'girl', and he also knows his resistance is wearing thin.... |

it's could be about the death of their marriage. He doesn't love her anymore, but stays (for the kids?) but his presence haunts her and she's tortured by "the life he left behind". Maybe she knows he's now in love with someone else, and she's pissed and upset since she feels she was there for him for many, many years. Maybe he had an affair ("these wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real, there's just too much that time cannot erase" but in any event she can't bring herself to leave HIM ("supressed by all my childhood fears") because she's scared of being alone... which she realizes she already IS, even though he's actually still there with her. She's mourning her empty marriage and wasted years.... very sad and haunting |

how about this.... married couple in a loveless marriage (very common scenario). man loves his kids so much that he stays - but the woman holds the power in the sexual sense and gives so little affection and admiration for so many years (you drain me dry and make me wonder why I'm even here) that the male finally falls in love with another. When he's found out he's just as pissed as she is (how dare you say that my behavior is unacceptable?) given that she had given up on the marriage many years earlier. He hopes his wife will just leave... but she doesn't (she needs him for his paycheck? Is emotionally shattered?) so he gives up his true love in order to be with his kids and for the financial security, but realizes he FINALLY has the control - he's not leaving, and she has no one and needs him far too much to walk out... in a sense they're both trapped because SHE treated him so badly for so many years. yet now she's playing the victim. the lyrics are incredibly gloomy, yet the tune is so upbeat you can't help but love it!! |
