The worst Christmas song ever! It is so poor.
I think he wrote it on a boring, rainy Sunday afternoon when he had nothing else to do and just wanted a tune that would pay royalties every year. |

This is to the first few idiots who posted on this. You are all plain thick if you think that there is any musical talent or quality in this. This monkey can't sing, he just jabbers unintelligably. But then, hey, I suppose it's down on your intelligence level.
Oh, B.T.W - I don't care if you call me a hater - I'm proud of the fact that I have the brains and taste to see this crap for what it is. |

Interesting debate about the last verse. I think 'Split' is more appropriate to a vagina, 'Crack' suits a backside better.
I think the verse refers to the revolving door love-lifestyle of people like Paris Hilton who change lovers more often than underwear. I think it means to be a subtle warning against that sort of lifestyle damaging you...although she is damaged beyond repair! |

I don't like Beyonce and I don't like this song. She has a good voice but, just like Mariah, she doesn't use it very well. This song is just another excuse for her to howl and shout. Overplayed and very poor. |

rich2481 - you have no idea of the facts you stupid mutt. Tom Fogerty died of AIDS - he contracted it from a blood transfusion he received during back surgery. He wasn't gay - he was married & had children. In fact, the band 'jammed together' at his wedding. People like you who don't know the real facts and engage in slanderous speculation make me sick - you're an idiot. |

Soulja BOY - with the emphasis on BOY, because he'll never be a man - is one of the worst scam artists around. This is absolute shit and I hope he blows all the money he makes and ends up bankrupt.
Anyone who enjoys this crap has an IQ of under 15.
My 7 year old son was disgusted with this saying that the 'idiot' can't even talk properly. |

Anyone who likes this drivel has a problem. The fact that this rubbish made it onto the charts shows just how dire todays music is. This idiot can't sing. He can't even talk proper English. But I suppose that there has to be something for the stupid people in society.
I seriously hope this stupid moron loses his voice so the rest of us don't have to put up with more of his senseless noise. |

Great song, great lyrics. This is just one of those timeless classics that still sounds great now as it did then. I think this is just about the futility of war and conflict. |

Something that people don't often discuss is what the music means to you. I'm not going to get into the meaning of the lyrics on this one because I do agree with Rebbal Ace on the multiple meanings point. The music of this song though inspires me and I could listen to it every day. It is clean and beautiful and played with such passion that you can't help but be moved by it. Live - it's awesome, listening to R in R, the final solo by Jannick rivals the haunting emotion of the first solo on Guns 'n Roses' November Rain. Brill' song.
Or do you think I'm nuts? |

I think the meaning behind this song is that you should look to and face your future with courage and build upon the memories of your past. Bruce did say that this is a song about being a musician but I suppose you could apply it to anything in life.
It's a superb song and sounds great live.
The intro reminds me a little of 'Dust in the Wind' by Kansas. |

I don't know how anyone who has read the lyrics above could say that this is Bible bashing, unless they are so poorly educated and thick or so anti-metal that they can't/don't wnat to understand it.
Iron Maiden have released a number of tracks with a pro-religious theme/content and have derided the false priests and money grabbing scamartists who use religion to enrich themselves. But because they have also released songs with darker and deeper meanings/tones, they are derided based upon uninformed ignorance.
I see a very pro-religious theme and meaning in this song. If anyone wants to look further into some of the bands motivations, put Nicko McBrain into Google & read some of the results - the man is a committed Born-Again Christian.
Oh - the song kicks ass too, only with Bruce singing it though, and the last guitar solo on the R in R album is a breath of fresh air....brilliant. |

Yes, another death theme, someone facing their end. But what a fabulous tune. I've watched this one over and over on the Death on the Road DVD and it is awesome...just listen out for Adrian Smiths distinctive sound & solo..the man is superb. |

Great song. TheJoeInMe is spot on with the meaning. Maiden do like to put some historical facts and figures into some of their songs, just shows their versatility.
First time I heard it the opening riffs sounded suspiciously like the opening from Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) - comments? |

This is probably the finest rock/metal song ever. This is the song that got me listening to Maiden to start with. I don't think when Steve Harris wrote it he had any conceptions about why the man was to be executed and I don't think that that is the point of the song. I think the point of it is where it picks up from, 1 hour before his execution and the thoughts and emtions from there and his (and also maybe Steve's?) belief in life after death.
Musically, it is such a fine composition that it is difficult to recapture it live (ala Queen with Bohemian Rhapsody) and the first time I heard a live version (R in R) I was disappointed because I felt it had lost it's tight and compact perfection and was too quick.
As for cover versions, the original was perfect - nobody can improve on it. COF made a total mess of it and should have been banned from releasing their version.
For my tuppence worth - Maiden are the finest rock/metal band ever....nobody else could emulate them. |

People...this song doesn't have much meaning. It's just stupid mindless hip-hop written by some moron out to make a quick fortune. The song itself is a boring monotone with no variation of beat showing a distinct lack of talent (as with all music of this genre)
And his voice is grating and irritating. All you suckers who went and bought the cd...just shows how bored you are! It also shows how crap music is now that this rubbish was number 1.
Long live real music. |

This is one of Maidens best tracks and I would recommend everyone to watch the live version on the Death on the Road DVD. Awesome is an understatement. Just to clarify a few misconceptions posted here, Adrian Smith wrote most of this track, Bruce and to a lessor degree Steve helped 'polish' it off but the main credit goes to Adrian.
It is and it isn't anti-war, the song is best described as a comment on the futility and horror of war, it makes no pro or anti comments or sentiments in itself but allows the listener make their own judgement by placing them in the trench and action with the soldier.
By not making any statement, it is a brilliantly clever composition and one worthy of the title of 'Classic'
Long live the Irons |
