Conor Oberst – Eagle on a Pole Lyrics 17 years ago
"This is the line that really shows what the song is about. "convinces me to walk without a cane" The cane are drugs, he needs the drugs to cope with a world that is an elaborate hoax, and if the world is revealed as being such he will no longer need his cane (drugs)."

-- I came on to write this exact thing. It's definite.

White Whale – The Admiral Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm surprised that nobody has commented on this song. It's pretty awesome.

Also "If somebody likes your song" is really "To the first somebody that you saw"

Tunng – tale from black Lyrics 18 years ago
This isn't a fantasy world, with real witches and real magic. This is the real world, with an aging woman, never very pretty, never able to fit in. She wants to believe, though, in such magic. She reads books, watches movies, hears stories about people who drain the life essence from others. People who can make themselves pretty, make themselves smart or interesting, by sacrificing others who hold those traits.

She kills, guiltily, in an attempt to seal a pact with the devil, because her whole life she's been dreaming that she's the prettiest one.

She can't avoid the regret, though. This is the real world, and all of these deaths don't actually help her to become a better person. She has to live, by herself, nobody to confess to, so she writes these stories down, and she makes things that she hopes will help absolve her. She does these acts of contrition, but every time, she gets this feeling, and she needs the excitement and the rush and to feel alive, so she goes out and does it again, in a fit of irrational emotion.

Tilly and the Wall – Shake Shake Lyrics 18 years ago
The first section of the song, especially "All the seasons they change in a wave of your hand" always makes me think of Conor Oberst, because he's always writing about the changing seasons, and has written about the movement of a hand waving quite a few times as well..

Bright Eyes – Jetsabel Removes the Undesireables Lyrics 18 years ago
Conor (the narrator) starts in the second verse talking about Arienette, and about how she left him. Then Jetsabel comes and starts taking away Arienette's things (the undesirables) so they stop haunting him about Arienette, because he doesn't like thinking about her, and they remind him of her.

Then later he says "I can see her again by the sink," and starts referring to the past, when Arienette was still around. Arienette (not Jetsabel) is the one who does the thermometer and reads the poetry. But time went on ("the clocks kept waving their hands") and he didn't get better, and though Arienette said "she would always be here," he knew better. He told her that she'd leave, and she did in the fall, just like he said, which is why "gold and green torture me", as those are the colors of the dead leaves lying in the grass.

He then brings it back to the present, where he tells Jetsabel again to throw Arienette's dresses away, because he doesn't want anything of hers, because too much reminds him of her already.
