it reminds me a lot of Albert Camus (an existentialist philosopher/writer). He uses the greek myth of sysiphus who was condemned to roll a rock up a hill which will then roll back down again, forever in the underworld, to illustrate the absurdity of life.
i think the song is about someone who is going through an existential crisis and trying to figure out a meaning in this absurd life. |

I think it's about the conflict between god and suicide, the "resolve" being suicide, and "climb onto the track" being the method. because in a lot of christian branches, it's preached that those who commit suicide are sent to hell, the singer is hoping that god will be merciful and understanding of her choice and asks herself if she's "saved" and finally relieved of her pain, or "damned".
i like morbid interpretations :) |

i too have mixed feelings about this song. i think the sentiment behind it is kinda nice, but to say that people in the 60's and 70's cared, and people now don't is an unfair statement. firstly, part of the reason why the 60's is famous for the anti-war campaigns is because there was still the draft. if people were forced to go to iraq, there'll be a more rebellious atmosphere. and nuclear wars were a much greater and realistic threat than it is now. as jebus_christ pointed out, there are a lot of social movements going on.
for modern "political" songs, i'll stick to artists like karine polwart, but nevertheless, there's something about this song that let's me listen to it twice. |
