To me, I see this song as a person's realisation of how foolish they were to have fallen in love.

She sings about all the wonderful things in life you start to notice when you're in love, such as the night stars and the fresh wind - and wonders "where was I" in all this. She was swept up and blinded by love.
Now at last she knows what it's like to be lonely after being hurt by love.
Very sad song, I agree about the Christmassy feel. |

Loved this song for ages, Adele is a gem. I have a few corrections that I'm 99% sure are correct:

& I think it's:

“I wrote that in about five minutes. I remember distinctly that I was waiting to go dinner and I had about twenty minutes to spare. I offhandedly said, ‘I think I’ll go down and fuck around on the piano’ and all of a sudden that song was finished. It sort of arrived. Those are always the best ones; they’re from some nether region that you have no control over.”
