i initially thought that cyrus and jeff's take on the last verse was excellent, but the other day i was listening to it and took it an entirely different way -- the entire song is about escaping, and in the first two verses, he does this by going into his room and listening to dance music. when he grows up, i think the last verse seems to indicate that he turns to drugs for an escape instead. the way i take it is "the last best thing he ever had", a good friend, turns to drugs, "special secret sickness" eating through him, and not knowing what else to do he follows him down his "twisted alleyways" and finds a few "cul-de-sacs" of his own. the "cul-de-sacs" being a newfound comfort of escape in using drugs that he had previously found by listening to dance music. although he realizes that it is not a good path to take, "there's only one place this road ever ends up / and i don't wanna die alone", and asks to be let down gently, which seems could be a double reference to being let down from a drug-induced high. the last line of the song completes the loop to me with him now using the phrase listening to dance music as a general reference to escaping problems. thoughts? |

yeah definitely a song about living life to its fullest the first time around, "and take your foot off the brake" is a great lyric. earlier in the first verse, he says - If we get our full three score and ten We won't pass this way again i think meaning that even if you live a normal life expectancy of 70 years (three score and ten = 70), you'll still only be able to live the present moment once so don't waste it. |
