This was my theme back in ninth grade - when the song came out. It always spoke to me about being messed up, depressed, aware of it but unable to find the tools to fix it. About the person or people who normally help you cope are finally having enough, and pulling away, and how much that hurts, even though you understand why. But also, how annoying and frustrating those people are too, always saying things along the lines of (though not always as banal) "cheer up" or "it'll get better" "it's not that bad, could be worse," WHen you're in that situation, that emotional headspace, those sentiments get annoying, if cheering up is that easy, how bout you just "reach down your hand in your pocket, pull out some hope for me?" |

Wasn't this also the song he quoted/recited when he was finally inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame thing? Always thought this song was expressing how he wasn't very widly accepted amongst fans here in North America. "I was born like this, I had no choice I was born with the gift of a golden voice" always seemed sarcastic to me, how here so many critics claimed he couldn't sing, and should stick to just writing poetry. In fact, if I remember, critics and suchlike have always been incredibly harsh on him. Other muscians, and his small but rather rabid fans on the other hand, agree that he has an insanely unique voice, and it was that uniqueness that made him madly popular overseas, while still being relatively unknown in mainstream here. |

| Maybe it's because I've been a fan of theirs since before Gorden, but to me, this song is a direct dig at the guy who left. (I think he was another member's brother?) But he left a record or so before Stunt (when mainstream American finally discovered them) to attend McGill University. In fact, I think there's quite a few references to him, and his descision on a different career track from Stunt onwards. | |
