It sounds to me like a song to someone/everyone she's lost to the major lables. Fair wheather friends. Someone she cared about who got lost in the lights.

This song is a personal tribute to my past. I am now married to the man that i connect this song with, which is still confusing at times. When we first met we mutually hated each other (they say the best ones start out that way). After some time, when I was seeing someone else, we were in the same circle again but this time it was different. He had a near death experience, which I brought him through. I guess trauma really does connect people... Anyway, I was taken so it didn't matter. Later, when I was single, we slept together, often, but no more came of it. He pretended to hate me, use me, etc. Truth was he was scared. This is why I am connected to the first and second verse. He treated me like a sicknes he had. I in turn did all I could to hurt him. Then we would have these dirty encounters and both feel wretched. I was his whore. He even did search for his clothes and make excuses to leave. He was never at my home past 6 am. I can't even remember when things changed. We just realized it wasn't worth it to hurt each other anymore... Now we have a beautiful 3 year old and we share a very happy life. Nostalgia not included. Sorry about the novel. This song brings me alot of pain, as well as joy.

Ani DiFranco – 32 Flavors Lyrics 19 years ago
This song, along with "not a pretty girl" was my anthem through highschool. I was always the "wierd" girl. A bit of a freak I guess. I was in love with self-expression through body art and fashion, but I took alot of bullshite because of it. Truth be told it made me stronger (with the help of Ani's beautifully truthfull lyrics of course). The metaphors in this song taught me alot about writting as well. I will always respect Ani for her art.

Ani DiFranco – Tiptoe Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that this is most definatlely a pro-choice song. It's about the freedom to chose what happens to your body. But it is also about the emotional trauma that one goes through when they decide to terminate a pregnancy, and surviving that trauma. "I could wake up screaming sometimes, but I don't" and "I could step off the end of this pier, but I've got shit to do..." speak volumes to how I felt when I made that decision. I agree that this is not the place to debate the pro-choice/pro-life contoversy. However, being a woman who had this experience I must quote lost woman song by saying Himtopia - have you led "a life free of mistakes"? Keep bashing...Reality will not break.
