He is singing to God, apologizing for what he has done wrong and promising that he will make ammends.

Leonard Cohen – Avalanche Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it may be about cocaine addiction: "I stepped into an avalanche, it covered up my soul" and " You who wish to conquer pain, you must learn, learn to serve me well"

Leonard Cohen – Suzanne Lyrics 18 years ago
mikus fikus, have another shot of tequila and realize you don't need to get angry because something is difficult to understand. This is a beautiful song that I don't completely understand either. I think the relationship between the first two verses may be one of the most touching things I have heard. I hope to one day understand the rest of the song. Also, trashing Leonard Cohen's writing is really showing ignorance. There is so much intelligence, depth and beauty to his song writing. Who, mikus fikus, could you possibly be listening to that earns your respect. If there is anything Cohen can do, it is write a song. Slow down and listen to the words.....and on second thought, step away from the tequila.

They Might Be Giants – She's An Angel Lyrics 19 years ago
This song seems to be about children in love. The self consciousness of a girls attention. The line "But everyone was acting normal so I tried to look nonchalant." comes to mind. also what can this mean:"The Shriners loaned us cars. We raced up and down the sidewalk twenty thousand million times"? The Shriners are well known for donating toys to children (as well as all of the other great things they do, medical care for hadicapped etc.) I see children racing toy cars up & down the sidewalk twenty thousand million times. Not adults, who would A: drive on the road & B:not have a car loaned to them by the Shriners. And C: not do anything 20,000,000,000 times.

They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics 19 years ago
Maybe now is where I should step in and say this song is about heroin. WRONG! This song is sung from the perspective of a blue canaray-shaped night light with a picture of a lighthouse across from it. Jason and the argonauts would have died screaming on the shore when their ship ran aground because a night light could never be bright enough to be seen from the ocean. The night light would have then been fired from its job. Sorry, this ones not about god. But check out "girls just want to have fun" by C. Lauper. It is full of biblical references ;) This is a great tmbg song

XTC – Dear Madam Barnum Lyrics 19 years ago
great XTC song. My take: a man experiencing the rotten emotions of his wifes extamarital affairs. They have always been great with double entendre and tongue in cheek lyrics.

Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics 19 years ago
I hate to disagree with so many people but first of all, Kurt did say the song was about kids with cancer on the air in an interview, I think it was a camouflage for what the song seems so obviously about (and he couldn't say on air): Heroin. "Meat eating orchids"-poppys! they devour people addicted to them. "Throw down your umbilical noose"-addiction. An umbilical cord that always draws you back. "cut myself on angle hair and babys breath"-possible street names for different kinds of heroin and "cut myself" alludes to injecting heroin. "Heart shaped box" itself is the shape of the opium pod underneath the poppy flower. The first two lines are speaking of the power of addiction. The second two are refering to black tar heroin. "Haight" refers to the drug capitol of the west coast-Haight Ashbury. This is the most eloquent of all songs devoted to heroin ever written.

They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics 19 years ago
No one has mentioned another less obvious palindrome-like pattern:"See the spring of the grandfather clock unwinding,See the hands of my offspring making windmills". With the words "spring/offspring" and "winding/windmill" tying the two lines together and looking forward with the word "offspring" and backward with the word "grandfather". It gives it a very backward/forward looking effect. This is not as blatant as the other palindromes but it seems to me to have been purposefully woven into this very clever song.
